We recently had the chance to connect with Christiana Otuyelu and have shared our conversation below.
Christiana, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Definitely. I’ve had moments where I was ready to jump into something just because it felt right in the moment — like new business ideas or even collabs. But I’ve learned that not every “yes” needs to be immediate. One time I almost rushed into expanding my lash services before I had the structure or even the client base to support it. I held back, took my time, and when I finally moved forward, it made way more sense — and honestly, it saved me from burnout. Sometimes slowing down is what sets you up for long-term wins.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Christiana Otuyelu, and I’m a lash artist and beauty entrepreneur based in the DMV area. I run my own lash business, Christiana Otuyelu, where I specialize in customized lash extensions that are designed to enhance your natural beauty while still making a statement.
What makes my brand unique is the personal experience I give each client — it’s more than just lashes, it’s about confidence and care. I focus on creating looks that are tailored to every individual, whether they want something soft and natural or bold and dramatic. Being in the DMV, the beauty scene is competitive, but that’s what pushes me to always level up and bring something fresh to the table. Right now, I’m focused on growing my client base, perfecting my techniques, and eventually expanding my brand in new ways.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The version of me that played small — she’s done her job, and now it’s time to let her go. In the beginning, I needed to be cautious, stay behind the scenes, and build quietly. But now, I’m in a place where I know who I am, I know what I bring to the table, and I’m not afraid to take up space. I had to release self-doubt, comparison, and the fear of “what if.” Spiritually, I feel like God has been preparing me for more — but to receive that, I had to let go of the mindset that I wasn’t ready or worthy. That part of me served a purpose, but it can’t come with me into this next chapter.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me patience, humility, and strength in ways that success never could. When things were hard — whether it was financially, emotionally, or mentally — I had to learn how to keep showing up even when no one was clapping for me. I had to rely on faith, not just confidence. Those tough moments built my character, not just my career.
Success is beautiful, but it’s loud. Suffering is quiet — and in that silence, I found who I really am. I learned how to trust myself, how to move with intention, and how to be grateful for every small win. Without the struggle, I wouldn’t have the depth, the work ethic, or the spiritual grounding I have today. And now that success is coming, I appreciate it so much more — because I earned it.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
If you asked my close friends, they’d probably say I just try to do the right thing without being fake about it. I’m not into playing games or pretending to be someone I’m not. If something doesn’t sit right with me, I don’t go along with it. I try to stay solid, keep my word, and treat people with basic respect. I don’t claim to have it all figured out, but I care about staying true to what I believe, even when it’s not the most convenient.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m not performing for anyone — when I can exist without pressure or expectations. It’s in those moments alone, or with people who truly accept me as I am, that I don’t feel the need to explain myself or keep up appearances. No pressure, no noise, just space to breathe and be. In those quiet times, it’s just me and my thoughts, and the relief of not having to be “on.” That’s when I feel most grounded, honest, and connected to myself.
