Community Highlights: Meet Emily Fultz of Fit with Food

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Fultz.

Emily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I first became interested in nutrition, I had no idea just how much went into becoming a registered dietitian. It’s a highly science-driven career, and that foundation is so important because it allows us to provide truly evidence-based guidance—something that feels especially meaningful in a world filled with nutrition myths, fads, and endless diet culture noise.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Delaware and went on to complete my dietetic internship through their distance program, which gave me the opportunity to gain experience across Maryland and DC. After finishing my supervised practice, I sat for and passed the national exam to earn my credential as a registered dietitian nutritionist. Later, while working full time, I pursued my Master’s in Nutrition and Human Performance through Logan University—graduating as valedictorian, which was a complete surprise and a moment of pride I’ll always carry with me.

But one of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been what’s happened since. What started as me working solo has grown into a thriving group practice with a team of incredible dietitians, each bringing their own passions and specialties to the clients we serve. I brought on my very first dietitian while pregnant with my oldest, who is now three, and just recently became a mom of two. Becoming both a mother and a business owner has been the most rewarding—and humbling—part of this journey. It’s taught me resilience, balance, and the importance of asking for help. Watching my practice grow alongside my family has been such a reminder that you can build something meaningful, not just for yourself, but for your community, while also creating space for the things that matter most at home.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Growing from a solo dietitian into leading a group practice came with a steep learning curve. Navigating insurance contracts, managing employees, and figuring out how to handle marketing were all challenges I had to learn mostly on the go. None of that was covered in my nutrition textbooks!

On top of that, balancing the demands of running a business while also being present for my family has been one of the biggest challenges—and also one of my biggest motivators. Becoming a mom changed the way I look at my work. It pushed me to create systems, ask for help, and give myself grace when things aren’t perfect. The juggle is very real, but those struggles have made me both a stronger business owner and a more empathetic dietitian.

As you know, we’re big fans of Fit with Food. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Fit with Food is a group nutrition practice I’ve built with the vision of making evidence-based, personalized nutrition care accessible to more people. We’re a team of five registered dietitians, each with our own specialties, which allows us to serve clients with a wide range of needs. Our expertise includes weight management, sports nutrition, digestive health, women’s health (including prenatal, post partum, PCOS and menopause), medical nutrition therapy for chronic diseases, and family-focused nutrition.

What sets us apart is that we don’t believe in quick fixes, diet trends, or one-size-fits-all advice. Instead, we focus on building sustainable strategies that honor each client’s lifestyle, goals, and values. We also accept insurance, which helps break down barriers to care and makes high-quality nutrition support more accessible.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Fit with Food has become both professional and approachable—a place where clients feel seen, supported, and empowered. Our slogan captures our philosophy perfectly: I believe we are fit with food, not without. To me, food isn’t something to fear or restrict; it’s the foundation for living well. That’s the message I want every client and reader to walk away with.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that balance doesn’t just happen—you have to create it. As a business owner, there’s always one more email to answer or one more project to work on, and it’s easy to feel like the computer can never truly be turned off at 5 p.m. But becoming a mom shifted my perspective in the best way. It reminded me that while my work is important, my family is my why.

I’ve learned to set boundaries, to ask for help, and to be fully present wherever I am—whether that’s with my team, with a client, or with my kids. It isn’t always perfect, but giving myself permission to step away from work when it’s family time has been one of the healthiest things I could do, both for me and for the people I serve.
