Story & Lesson Highlights with Mango Marketing Co of Woodberry

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mango Marketing Co. Check out our conversation below.

Mango, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have you ever been glad you didn’t act fast?
Yes, we talk about this all the time as business owners. The balancing act of impulse, urgency and planning. More often than not, there is no need to act fast because the right time will come and it will be smooth sailing. If we have to act quickly but it’s planned is very different than acting fast and scrambled. We have a Baltimore HQ for Alicia to work photography with clients and use as our Baltimore Hub. We wanted to get one for Philadelphia as a space for Natty and the social team. We thought we found the space, but nothing was lining up, we had to “act fast” though. We decided to be against it and wait it out. So happy we did because for about a year we went through so many transitions that wouldn’t of made that studio space worth it. We’ve aligned better and am slowly organizing for something like that to make it happen.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey! We’re Natty and Alicia. The Co-Founders of Mango Marketing Co. We are a women-led digital marketing agency that focuses on branding, websites, social media, branding photography and so so much more. We like to say we plant the seeds to grow your brand — digitally. At Mango Marketing Co, we have core values we implement into ourselves and all of our clients work. Our core values are Compassion, Accountability, Transparency, Community Support and Self Expression. We value them all equally and live by the importance of equity.

Mango Markerting Co also has to other parts to it. We have Mango Members and Mango Mixers. Mango Members is our education focused, DIY structured, exclusive marketing membership program. This is the perfect match for business owners who want to build community, gain resources and take a more do-it-yourself approach to marketing. We are available monthly for support, ask questions and build as a community. Each membership program starts every 3 months and has the opportunity to renew. Most do and we love how it’s grown!

Mango Mixers is our events portion. We have small events throughout the year to support the small business owner community within Baltimore and Philadelphia. Often times we will have small meets up geared to industry professionals as well. Every summer we throw our larger “Mango Mixer”. This community focused networking event keeps us accountable as we have a highlighted non-profit (or two) that we focus on in both Baltimore and Philadelphia.

We are forever growing as a business. we are so thankful for our team, our clients, our members and our mixer attendees.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Natty – “I will answer this question. My mom told me my kindergarten teacher said I was the princess at the ball. My mom references this story often even now. She told my mom that I was a born leader, would spend time with kids that were more shy and I would be able to gather a group to follow me around. I think the story is so silly. But, I realized I have always been powerful and strong in my own confidence. I could change the world by being me and by taking care of those who needed extra support”

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Alicia – “One day, you will live a life you never dreamed of for yourself. It will be better than all the goals, lists, and plans you laid out. You will find a way to turn all of your strengths and weaknesses into an entrepreneurial career. ”

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
We are strong believers of consistency and leaning into your website. This is the world of Instagram Aesthetic and TikTok Viral Dances. They can be fun but not every brand should do them. People want to go viral because they think thats the key to business success. We can’t blame them for that misinformation. However, most people can’t afford to go viral because they do not have the foundation in place to handle the intense shift in orders, clients, or traffic to their space. A strong social media is a fail without a strong website, A CRM program and a seamless ordering system.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Compassion and that people are people. Life is messy. We hire people for jobs we think they want but they can grow. Not all your “bad at their job” employees are bad people. A lot of them just lost motivation and passion for what they are doing. It is our job as good leaders to either respark the joy or find their strengths that can be transferred into another position. This isn’t for everyone and every scenario but a lot of times some feedback, a touch base and a change in responsibility can make a difference in your team, yourself and your company.
