Angel Penuela shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Angel, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I find that life is prompting me more than ever to live authentically in my truth. To do that, I have to be confident in myself, my abilities, and my purpose in this lifetime. I was not always ready to do this, and it’s still an everyday process. I think what makes things different now is that I’m much more secure in the goals that I have for myself and I know that these hurdles have to be crossed to get there.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey y’all, I’m Angel Penuela, an independent R&B artist. My goal is to make “R&B that soothes” through smooth vocals and sounds that carve spaces for self reflection + empowerment. I released my debut single, Latter Option this past April which has a vibey alt-R&B tone. I’m currently working on my EP which will return a bit to my personal interpretation of traditional R&B, so stay tuned! <3
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world laid its expectations on me, I was definitely an explorer. I had so many questions and curiosities about the world (and still do) but I was so willing to try new things as long as it involved my creativity. As a child, I could be a jeweler, chess player, violinist, painter, doctor, singer, etc, if that’s where my imagination led me.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I would say the fear of failure itself. As you have more experiences on earth, (and as you inch closer to your goals,) you’re bound to fail more. I’ve experienced a lot of failures that felt soul crushing at the time, but they were pivotal teaching moments. I learned so much about myself, and how to propel myself forward. Eventually, I began to learn that failure is the necessary precursor to success.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Kindness will get you further than you think it will, but don’t perform it, be it. If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything. Your intuition usually won’t lead you astray, so don’t abandon it. Listen to your inner child so the adult you can stop hurting.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I regret not officially making music earlier. It felt so overwhelming coming out of high school, and at the time I pivoted in college, but the passion and talent was always there. I just needed to take myself (and my craft) more seriously, and fall in love with music again, but on my own terms.
