Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyesha Murphy.
Hi Tyesha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in the late ’70s to young parents impacted by the crack cocaine era, and for a long time, I believed the hardest chapters of my life were behind me. I built a life centered on family, raising three children and supporting my then-husband’s military career. But in 2016, the word “divorce” entered my world, and over the next few years, my life unraveled in ways I couldn’t have imagined—mentally, emotionally, and financially.
By 2017, I was divorced, alienated from my children, battling depression, facing bankruptcy, and barely hanging on at my government job. I smiled through the pain, but inside I felt empty. Therapy, medication, and faith kept me going, but I still felt hopeless. I knew something had to change, and I began making choices that put my well-being first, even before my role as a mother.
A wellness retreat in Bali became a turning point—it removed me from my environment, connected me with incredible women, and introduced me to holistic healing practices. Still, I realized there was a gap: retreats needed to meet women where they were in their healing journey, especially Black women navigating unique personal and professional challenges. I envisioned a space with tailored wellness workshops, mental health support, and genuine community.
That vision became Reset By Design Wellness in 2022. Today, we curate luxury wellness retreats for Black women around the world—safe, affirming spaces that allow them to rest, heal, and connect without judgment. Our curated wellness workshops are led by licensed mental health professional Kina Huffman, our Lead Mental Wellness Facilitator. Kina’s expertise plays a vital role in guiding our attendees through transformative sessions that meet them exactly where they are.
Our work is deeply personal because I know what it’s like to feel there’s no way forward. Reset exists to remind women that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and they don’t have to walk toward it alone.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. When we launched our first retreat in Ghana, only six people attended—two of them were myself and Kina. Financially, it was a huge strain, and there were moments when I questioned if the retreat would even happen. But I believed so strongly in the vision that I pushed forward, even when it meant stretching my personal resources to make it work.
Because Reset By Design Wellness has been completely self-funded, one of the biggest challenges has been gaining visibility without the backing of large marketing budgets or PR teams. I’ve had to be creative and intentional about how we reach our audience. One of the most impactful partnerships has been with YouTuber Bondy Blue—her support and promotion of our retreats on YouTube and Instagram have been instrumental in getting us in front of the women we serve.
Each retreat since Ghana has grown from that foundation, and seeing the transformation in our attendees makes every challenge worth it.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?

The most significant shift will be toward culturally affirming retreats that create lasting impact rather than just a temporary escape.
