Life & Work with Nicholas Siler of Patterson Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Siler.

Nicholas, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Baltimore City FC was created in part due to two parts of frustration coming to head by myself and my co-founder Joe. Joe and a couple of soccer connections were frustrated at the lack of a city-based team allowing amateur soccer players to train and compete and improve without having to drive many miles from home to do so, leaving aside organisational quality. I was frustrated in the same vein in not being able to walk out of my house and support a local club without traveling far where the identiy of the club would not be familiar to me at all. We spent most of 2022 talking to many shakers and movers in the city about our ideas (and plans) and also spoke to many actors who have attempted previous iterations of a soccer club in Baltimore who advised us best on how to proceed and who to connect with. What this eventually lead to was a successful amateur team that has captured the soccer identiy of the city in both its emblem, playing style, and fandom. Numerous players also are city-based and all our sponsors and partners are notable local entities active in the city and now active in the soccer scene through us as well. In three years we have pulled more fans to amateur soccer games than any other club, and have 5 trophies to boot. This is thanks to organizational quality, dedication to a mission to professionalise with patience, and a fan atmosphere unrivaled by our competitors.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Truthfully, it has been a smooth road. Joe and I come from emergency management and marketing backgrounds which hand in hand have allowed us to run this club like a well oiled engine. We made sure to do a lot of learning about how best to prepare and manage a club before even having a name and this ethos continues to this day as we look to improve our operations off feedback and new developments before anyone else. Results have come season after season in our favor too, with good connections to colleges, other clubs, and scouting numerous competitions in the area of all types. We have won in our first season and have been to a final every season since and our reserves team has also started to compete for titles as well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a emergency response specialist for governments and NGOs, which require foresight, adaptabilty, and good preperation. The logistics therein are also a key part of my ability to do my job, as well as that as managing director of Baltimore City F.C.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking has not worked well for me unlike many others. Indeed self-education and having a spectacular relationship with superiors has actually been the best method for growing in my field, as well as an attitude to take any effort on.
