Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Brown.
Hi Alana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Alana C. Brown is the Executive Director of Court Watch Montgomery.
Ms. Brown was an award-winning attorney who had been fighting injustice for black women survivors of domestic and sexual violence for the last twelve years. Her expertise in the law has helped create a pathway for black women survivors of domestic and sexual violence to receive free legal aid services to help facilitate their healing journey.
In 2018 Ms Brown started The Safe Sisters Circle to provide culturally specific, trauma-informed, and holistic services for Black women and girl survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault living primarily in Washington, DC’s Wards 7 and 8 through the creation and development of its East of The River Women’s Legal Services Project, Healing Justice Mental Health Clinic, and survivor advocacy program. .
In 2022, Ms. Brown was selected as a “2022 Washingtonian of the Year” by Washingtonian Magazine, a distinction held by community “heroes” in the Washington DC community for her work and its impact on Black women survivors in Washington DC as the Founder and Executive director of The Safe Sisters Circle. In 2022, Ms. Brown also received the National Bar Association’s Top 40 Under 40 Advocates Award for her work with The Safe Sisters Circle, its influence on the Washington, DC legal community, and her fearless advocacy for her clients.
In 2024, Ms. Brown transitioned out The Safe Sisters Circle and founded a nonprofit consulting firm for Black women and women of color looking to help others that had been in her position- and to increase Black and Brown women’s presence in the local nonprofit community.
Through A Cultured Business, Ms. Brown provides expert coaching and consulting services specifically designed to elevate Black and women of color leaders making an impact in the social sector. From starting a nonprofit to securing sustainable funding, Alana empowers leaders to transform their vision for equity into lasting impact.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a Black woman leader in both nonprofit and entrepreneur landscape and always fighting to get my voice and ideas heard and to be respected as a leader. Additionally, such little funding opportunities for Black women entrepreneurs and business owners,
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about A Cultured Business?
A Cultured Business provides holistic and innovative coaching and consulting services for rising Black women and women of color leaders and their funders to support them in making a positive social impact to their communities- as I did with my former nonprofit, The Safe Sisters Circle, and current nonprofit, Court Watch Montgomery.
