Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre Brown Jr..
Hi Andre, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had a deep love and respect for food, especially the kind that’s rooted in family, memory, and culture. I grew up surrounded by amazing cooks, my mother and grandmothers poured love into every dish they made, and that stayed with me. That foundation took me to the Baltimore International College to study Culinary Arts and allowed me to work in great establishments like Restaurant 2110 under Chef Benny Gordon.
Although my professional path led me into federal government leadership, food has always been my creative outlet and passion. Over the years, I experimented with recipes, especially ice cream, and realized I had something special when people kept asking for more. What started as a hobby evolved into a mission: to create soulful, comforting, and unforgettable flavors that bring people together. That’s how Grown Man Gourmet was born.
GMG is about more than just dessert, it’s about legacy, flavor, and creating moments of joy. I launched the business with the goal of sharing that experience with others, starting with ice cream and expanding into other delicious offerings like frosted pecans, baked goods, and soups.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any entrepreneurial journey, it hasn’t always been smooth. Balancing a full-time leadership role with launching and growing a food business is no small feat. Add in the logistics of small-batch production, building brand awareness, managing pop-ups, testing recipes, and getting customer feedback, there’s a constant learning curve.
There were also internal battles – overcoming self-doubt, pushing through perfectionism, and trusting the vision even when things didn’t go as planned. But those struggles sharpened my focus and helped me become more intentional about what GMG stands for and how we serve.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Grown Man Gourmet is a handcrafted food brand that specializes in soulful, flavor-forward ice cream and comfort treats that spark nostalgia and joy. We’re known for bold, thoughtful flavors, like our signature For the Grahm, Church Cobbler Crunch, Browned Butter Pecan, and Cookies -n- Cream, each one telling a story or evoking a feeling.
What sets GMG apart is the heart behind the product. Every scoop, swirl, and batch is made with purpose. Our recipes are inspired by family, culture, and creativity, with real ingredients and no shortcuts.
We serve our customers through pop-ups, church partnerships, private catering, and select direct-to-consumer options. We’re also expanding into corporate gifting and consignment retail.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how people feel when they try our products. There’s a connection, a spark of joy, and that’s what it’s all about. I want readers to know that GMG isn’t just about great food; it’s about warmth, story, and excellence in every detail.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say resilience paired with purpose. There’s a deep “why” behind what I do and that’s what fuels me through late nights, setbacks, and the grind of building a brand. I’m not just selling ice cream; I’m building something that reflects my story, uplifts my community, and creates memorable experiences.
Staying rooted in that purpose, while being open to growth, feedback, and evolution, has been key to GMG’s success so far.
