Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherilyne Dougherty.
Hi Sherilyne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I traded my briefcase for a Life of Art – now I am living my best life, being inspired and creating! What started as a hobby has become my full-time passion. Get to know more about me and my journey.
I’ve always believed that art should be lived in—not just looked at. As a lifelong artist and the founder of Designs by Sherilyne, my journey has been shaped by curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for beauty in all its forms. Long before I launched this brand, I was immersed in the creative process—experimenting, evolving, and building a visual language uniquely my own.
Designing is more than a profession; it’s personal. Each collection reflects the values that matter most to me: authenticity, intention, and fearless self-expression. I’m passionate about creating pieces that don’t just make a statement – they tell a story. And I’m honored to share that story through every thread, color, and form.
About Sherilyne’s Work
Sherilyne, the creative force behind Designs by Sherilyne, has spent a lifetime immersed in the world of art. From photography and fused glass to painting and mixed media, she has explored a wide range of artistic expressions, developing a signature style defined by vibrant color, movement, and emotion.
After building and selling a successful Washington, DC-based consulting company, I made the bold decision to pivot from the corporate world to pursue my true passion. This transition marked the beginning of a new chapter -one where art and fashion converge.
Today, I transforms my original artwork into wearable narratives that merge art and fashion. My designs are bold, unconventional, and created to empower those who wear them. With Designs by Sherilyne, I have redefined what it means to dress with intention, offering pieces that are as expressive and unique as the individuals who wear them.
Rooted in authenticity and fueled by creativity, Sherilyne continues to push artistic boundaries—one design and style at a time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a new venture always comes with obstacles and challenges. About a year ago, during my travels in Europe, I had the idea to transform my art into apparel, sparking the beginning of my journey into the creative fashion space. As a retired entrepreneur who sold my company in D.C., I saw this as a fun, creative outlet—an opportunity to explore a new form of artistic expression.
Building this startup involved assembling the right team and navigating unfamiliar territory—fashion, social media, website design, and business strategy. It’s been a steep learning curve, but we’ve made significant progress. Recently, we secured a space at The Canvas in the Oculus Atrium at the World Trade Center in New York City, which feels like a major milestone. We’re excited about the future and the possibilities ahead.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a diverse and rewarding career spanning several fields. I began as a registered nurse, then transitioned into teaching nursing at various universities. Later, I moved into the corporate world, working for government contractors in the D.C. area. After several years, I founded and successfully sold my own business-government contracting in the Human Resource and IT space.
Throughout my career, I’ve always been deeply artistic—practicing photography, painting, sculpture, fused glass, and jewelry making in my free time. These creative pursuits were hobbies that brought me joy and fulfillment.
After selling my business, I found myself with the freedom and time to focus on my passions. I began exploring painting, fused glass, and silver jewelry more seriously. Then, an idea took shape: to transform my artwork and photography into fashion. This new venture, Designs by Sherilyne, combines my artistic talents with my love for innovation.
What I’m known for is my ability to blend creativity with entrepreneurship, always pushing boundaries and exploring new avenues. I love the process of creating and bringing art to life in innovative ways, and I’m passionate about turning ideas into meaningful, impactful projects.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My love for Baltimore began during my time in graduate school at the University of Maryland downtown, where I earned my master’s degree. I then spent many years teaching nursing at the University of Maryland and working closely with my nursing students at Mercy Hospital. I lived in Towson for a long time, got married there, and became involved in the lacrosse community, which was a very fun and vibrant lifestyle.
Later, I moved to Annapolis because I love the water and wanted a more creative, relaxed environment. At this stage in my life, I’m fortunate to be able to enjoy both the water and the artistic pursuits I’m passionate about.
What I don’t love as much about Baltimore is the increase in crime, which I’ve noticed over the years. I hope that situation improves and that the city continues to thrive.
