Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Covatta.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 1946 my grandfather Anthony opened his 1st restaurant in Norristown PA. He went on to open 8 more on the Main Line from Strafford to Malvern. My Parents, Uncle & Aunt took over when he retired opening their first of many restaurants starting with the Thorndale Inn. In 1985 my parents and I bought the Red Rose Inn and I continued to buy and sell restaurants in PA and Maryland.
Me personally, I’m celebrating over 50 years of cooking in our kitchens. In 1971 at 6 years old my father Richard would take me to my grandfather’s restaurant at 7am where I would help in the kitchen before getting the noon school bus to kindergarten (yes I smelled like garlic).
Now after all the years and 25 very successful restaurants the Covatta Family want to thank all of the customers, friends and staff that made all this possible.
I opened Steak & Main in 2003. since then we have become Nationally & Internationally famous through many TV Shows but our love for the local community has kept us going.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
it actually has been a very smooth and gaining strength for over 21 years.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
what started out as a Prime Steak House with Italian influences has added a larger and more diverse menu than expected. with minimal restaurants and a large local community with tons of seasonal tourists we’ve expanded our menu to include a full Sushi Bar and plenty of seafood items. our attempt was to make it a “one stop shop”. Guests love the fact they can get a Prime cut of beef and sushi or Lamb Chops and a Burger, great seafood including crab cake of course. we have an extensive wine list including my own Covatta Cellars Wines and a great bar with amazing craft cocktail. as Owner and Executive Chef i will only buy the highest quality of any product available to make your dining experience the best. I have been fortunate enough to take my Restaurant to the next level and have appeared on 15 plus TV shows on Travel Channel, Food Network, The Cooking Channel, Destinations America, Access Hollywood with Mario Lopez and pretty much all the Baltimore and Philadelphia Local channels.
I have also started a Business Scholarship at Cecil College and a Culinary Scholarship at Cecil County School of Technology.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
the future for us is looking up as for the last 21 years here at Steak & Main and the last almost 80 years we’ve owned restaurants
our growth has far exceeded our expectations.
