Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Bladel.
Hi Katelyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got a laser cutter in 2019 and remember thinking, “Okay… now what?” I have a master’s degree in printmaking, so I initially thought I’d use it for something related to that, maybe making woodcut blocks to print. But I was a little intimidated by the machine at first, so I decided to start small. I began experimenting with earrings because they were manageable in size and a fun way to test out designs.
Statement earrings have been a big part of my wardrobe since high school, so it felt natural to make the kind of pieces I was excited to wear. When my friends started getting excited about them too, I thought maybe I was onto something.
I moved to Philadelphia in September 2019 and officially launched Studio Bladel the following month. In 2021, I started selling in person at local markets, and by 2022, I was able to make it my full-time job. I still pinch myself that this is what I get to do for a living.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running your own business definitely comes with challenges. I’m a one-woman show, which means I do everything: designing and making earrings, restocking, managing wholesale accounts, selling at weekend markets, running my online shop, and posting on social media. It’s a lot, and I’m constantly learning.
I absolutely love what I do, but it can be overwhelming to be the sole person responsible for your own success. There’s no guaranteed paycheck. Some weeks are amazing, and others are much quieter. What’s helped me most is keeping the big picture in mind, setting clear goals, and figuring out what I need to stay positive during the more stressful times.
I keep a sign above my desk that says “Everything is figureoutable,” and that mantra really helps on the hard days. I truly believe that what I do has value, and that belief is one of the biggest motivators for me through every season of running this business.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in laser-cut acrylic statement earrings. I’m known for bold, unique designs that are both playful and polished. People often tell me, “Wow, I just love everything!” and “You have something for everyone,” and I take a lot of pride in that.
My collection tends to split into two main vibes. One half is chic and vintage-inspired—think art deco, clean lines, and rich, classic color palettes. The other half is full of bold shapes, bright colors, and iridescent acrylics that really pop. Both sides reflect my personal style, which I think helps keep the brand cohesive and authentic.
I’m most proud of the joy and confidence my earrings bring people. I love hearing that someone wore a pair for a birthday, bachelorette weekend, concert, or just out to dinner or to work, and felt amazing doing it. That’s the goal.
What really sets Studio Bladel apart is my attention to craft. With my background in printmaking—a very meticulous process—that discipline shows up in every part of my work. I want my earrings to feel fun and expressive, but also to be high quality: well-made, durable, and accessible. That balance matters to me. I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received from customers, markets, and fellow makers. Moving forward, I hope to keep connecting with people who love bold, thoughtful design.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
When I’m not in my studio making earrings, you can probably find me out at a cocktail bar or restaurant eating something delicious. I definitely have some favorite places in Baltimore. Nothing beats the vibe at W.C. Harlan, and I daydream about the bao buns at Ekiben.
