Meet Lakeisha Grimes Fletcher of Washington DC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeisha Grimes Fletcher.

Hi Lakeisha , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In high school, I used my mother’s typewriter to complete a 15-page short story for a journalism class. I wrote my short story and received a passing grade. That experience changed my perspective on writing… the purpose of writing…the influence of writing… and the creativity in writing. I continue to write throughout high school but not for class assignments. Instead, I wrote for me. Unknowingly at that time, my writing allowed me to be a star in my own movie called life as I journaled my thoughts, my interactions with others and just about anything else that happened to me.

My journal was my therapy!

As I journaled, I noticed a rhythm in my writing. Most, if not all, of my writings had a rhythmic flow to it. I found joy in writing as I filled the pages of my journal with a flow of words that dance on the paper and sound like music to my ears. I was becoming a poet through my writing.

I saved my journals from high school and continued to write as an adult. The more I journaled, the purpose of my writing became clearer; my influence became stronger, and my creativity grew bigger and more expansive. I was to become a published author and poet.

After accepting this epiphany and fast forward to 2024, I publicly released my writings into the world. I officially became a published author and poet of my first book titled, “Rediscovering The Goddess, Journaling Through My Journey to Redefine Me” by Lakeisha Fletcher in 2024, which demonstrates the recreation of goddess-like habits and routines to restore and rejuvenate one’s self through journaling. Within the pages of my first published book, I provide the reader with 88 unique poems of my truth, in addition to, a space for the reader to journal and create their personal daily practices of gratitude, affirmations and reflections.

I was able to take my compilation of writings and poems to create a masterpiece that provides my readers with the space to capture their journey from rupture to rapture.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Challenges and changes are inevitable in life. It’s a part of life and its unavoidable. In knowing this, I’ve had challenges with time management. And, I’ve learned how to spend your time and where to spend your time is priceless.

Procrastination is well known for delaying an individual from completing a task or avoiding the task all together. This has become a challenge for me when there is a need to decipher how to spend my time and where to spend my time. For example, I can choose to spend my time at work (getting things done), at play (enjoying life), or at rest (sleeping/napping) depending on my mood, how much time I have to do it and what needs to get done. If I work too much, I won’t have enough time to play and rest which can make me grumpy. If I play too much, I won’t accomplish my goals and make good use of my time to succeed. If I sleep too much, I won’t get anything done. And if I do all three, I may feel my time management is not well managed.

To combat this mental dilemma, I use a daily scheduler to assist me with organizing my thoughts, time and tasks. And, as needed, I use collaboration! I know that working with others, through positive collaborations, I will increase my productivity as well as visibility.

Although it hasn’t been a smooth road on my journey to success, I use time management, with the help of collaboration, to become smarter, stronger and more marketable in overcoming any challenge in life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an Author, who tells her story to the world to empower and inspire others. I entertain my readers through my words and expand their imagination through my storytelling. I am a Poet who creates art from words and rhythm. I use rhythming words to express myself and feelings in an artistic way. I am a Transformative Life Coach & Healing Leader who listens before she speaks. I create safe places for individuals to heal and brave spaces for individuals to speak their truth. I am a dedicated Yogi who practices a holistic lifestyle and teaches others to do the same. I am a Holistic Gardener who is kind to the earth and a conserver of life’s precious elements.

And, I am most proud to be a Mother, who nurtures the next generation and communicates the importance of physical, spiritual, psychologically and intellectually well-being. My legacy lives on as a Mother through my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a result, through my many roles and responsibilities, my integrity and work ethic set me apart from others. With integrity and a strong work ethic, I demonstrate honesty about who I am and what I am capable of, which keeps me grounded, focused and thriving in life.

My work ethic comes from my ability to believe in me which started at home. I have high self-efficacy, which means my self-belief and self-awareness to reach my goals are at a high level. This allows me to value myself, trust myself, believe in myself and value the work that I do for myself.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
As a first-time published Author and Poet, it is extremely important to read! Read your contract before signing it. Read relevant autobiographies to gain insight and best strategies in your professional field. Read business journals and documents to understand payments, commission and royalties in business deals. Read for understanding and empathy. Read to improve your written and verbal communication skills. Read as much as you can to learn, grow and think independently as a business owner.

And, stay focus with regular and consistent check-ins with yourself. As a first timer in business, I’ve learned a few things such as (1) take the time to create a list of short- and long-term goals and check on your goals regularly. This will assist with creating a routine of consistency. (2) Be adaptable! Be willing to try something new. If it is uncomfortable yet safe, try it and get use to being comfortable in uncomfortable situations. (3) And try collaboration! Create a team… Network… Trust in yourself and trust in your team.
