Conversations with Continental Breakfast Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Continental Breakfast Club.

Hi Continental Breakfast Club, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Continental Breakfast Club was formed in 2022 by Brad Hunt (Vocals, Guitar), Cam Schaefer (Bass), Kenny Keller (Lead Guitar), and Justin Crosby (Drums) .

In 2022, struggling to process a breakup, Brad turned to journaling at the recommendation of his therapist. Instead of taking a prescriptive approach to documenting his thoughts, he let his thoughts spill out onto the pages, which turned out to be in the form of poems with themes of longing and loss. One night, when he was feeling particularly down, Brad found himself sitting on his bathroom floor (the only room of his rented Baltimore townhome which featured a rare muffled silence) where he plucked his guitar off the wall and started to craft a melody for one of his poems. It was the first time he had played in over four years and felt like something had unlocked in his brain.

The poems kept coming, and eventually, Cam (Brad’s roommate and friend of over a decade) heard the strumming and asked what songs Brad had been learning. It was then that Brad played a few of his new original songs for Cam, and the wheels were in motion. Cam, a trained musician in his own right, helped Brad refine the songs. The two spent months creating half-baked demos on GarageBand in ‘the loft’, a 10×10 lofted area of the rowhome which would eventually serve as the band’s practice space. Not too long after, the duo met Kenny Keller, a Denver transplant who had played in previous bands and had formal musical training. Once he heard some of the songs Brad and Cam had been working on, he joined as the third member and brought a wealth of music theory and psychedelic guitar licks to the group’s disposal. As quickly as there were three, the group found a fourth member in Justin Crosby. A mutual friend for years, upon hearing the news that the trio had formed, he detailed over beers with the crew that he had once been in the jazz band in high school and wanted to get back into drumming. And then there were four.

Since then, the band has spent their time practicing and playing locally in Baltimore, primarily bar gigs, and recording their songs. They released their first single “Dividing Lines” in August of 2023, and following a string of singles, independently released their first album “Love Songs from the Bathroom” in June of 2024, named after the very same bathroom which served as Brad’s creative space for the songs on the album. They are now in the process of finishing up their next batch of songs, which are thankfully not focussed as heavily on love and instead explore on taking our sound as a group to the next level, which are due out in Summer 2025, along with accompanying shows in the Baltimore/DC area in Fall 2025 .

I just realized I wrote this all in third person, sorry about that.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This journey has definitely been far from smooth, but having the support of the entire band, our friends/family, and our new music network makes it manageable. We all have day jobs that take up a lot of our time and attention, so finding that balance is especially hard while also maintaining relationships, our health, and whatever else life throws at us. We went into this knowing almost nothing about what being in a band meant or how to properly record and produce music, and we definitely still have a ton to learn.

We’ve been stumbling through the process the entire time but have had a ton of help along the way from very talented people who have taken the time to help us. This experience overall has both its frustrating moments as well as gratifying ones where we get that ‘aha’ moment and things all click. Whether it’s learning new production tips and software, getting over writers block needing to finish a song after a long day at work, or simply learning how to play as a cohesive unit, there always seems to be some kind of hurdle. But what makes it fun is being able to clear them together. This truly is something we are passionate about, and while it’s something that asks a lot of us, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

You can’t begin to run without taking your first steps, and falling over in the process just means you learn to get up quicker.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d like to think what sets us apart as a group is our authenticity. Every bit of our music comes from a place of honesty and vulnerability which I think resonates with our fans. We take a lot of pride in not striving to make the next pop hit, or follow the trends to make something you can put into a one size fits all box. Each song comes from a place of true emotion and focusses on things that we are experiencing in the moment. The cool thing about this whole experience is that we are learning how to better tell these stories in our songwriting and production. We want the listener to feel like we are having a conversation, one that stems from a really honest place and connects us to the listener.

Also, we love performing live and building up a following in Baltimore. There have been some insanely great bands come out of Baltimore which are huge inspirations to us: Future Islands, Beach House, Snail Mail; as well as the legendary record shop, of The Sound Garden which is so deeply rooted in this city. We love this city and owe it (and the people in it) a lot. I like to think we embody the grit and weirdness that makes Baltimore, Baltimore. I firmly believe the benches that say Baltimore is the greatest city in America, and if we can give back at all / make the Baltimore music scene continue to produce great bands / performers then we will do everything in our power to do so.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
