Rising Stars: Meet Dionte Wilkens of Baltimore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dionte Wilkens.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and was an artist since I was a child. I would draw and color in classes since elementary school and eventually studied Fine Arts in college at Catonsville Community College. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and general anxiety so I had to drop out of school. I managed to find a new art school called Zoll Studio of Fine Arts where I learned oil painting. I have been painting and making art ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My mental health has been a big challenge in my life. Being bipolar made me inactive with art making and jobs for years but I try my best to rise above that obstacle in order to at least create art that reflects my experience and overcoming my problems.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With my art I seek to explore black perspectives, peace, meditation, and mental health. I incorporate figurative art with the human body as well as elements of nature like plants and animals. I use these characteristics and symbolism to form a language that can communicate love, transcendence and freedom which I hope will create connection, relation, and ignite conversations about the human experience. I would also like to share my creativity with the community and create spaces where others can express themselves.

What does success mean to you?
For me, success is about making a positive impact and continuing to grow. If I can keep learning, support the people around me, and stay true to my values, I feel like I’m on the right track. I don’t think of success as a destination—more like a journey of doing meaningful work and staying grateful along the way.
