Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Snow Walker
Hi Wendy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Spotlighters Theatre Company was started by Audrey Herman 62 years ago. We are a thriving community theatre presenting challenging and engaging productions in the Baltimore area. Our intimate theatre-in-the-round venue offers a unique opportunity for the audience to truly feel as though they are part of the action happening on stage. Our shows run the gamut from classical to modern, serious drama to ridiculous comedy, and holiday fun to absurd pop culture gems. We create theatre that makes you think, provokes deep conversation, and gives you all the feels. We have plenty of volunteer opportunities for new friends to join us on stage and backstage to help bring our creative work to life. Come join the fun at Spotlighters!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
COVID closures were difficult for everyone, but the theatre industry in general has had a particularly difficult time bouncing back. So many patrons got comfortable streaming shows at home in their jammies and not fighting traffic; going out to see live theatre has fallen off of many social calendars. But…we are back and we are busy creating new work that you don’t want to miss!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I began my performing career in the 1980s by hosting a teen talk show called Scholastic Update and doing a series of local commercials; I returned to the small screen in 2012 with a recurring role on the Netflix series House of Cards and I currently continue to bring interesting characters to life on the stage, in short films, and commercials throughout the DMV.
After graduating from Washington College with a degree in Drama, I have spent the last 35 years bouncing between stage and screen work in both performance and production. In the theatre, I have performed on professional stages in NY, Maryland, and DC – including The Kennedy Center. Behind the scenes, I am a former Equity stage manager, and currently a proud member of IATSE Local 772 working on costume crews at theatres such as The National, The Warner, and the Kennedy Center. I am also a member of Local 487 working on the crews of commercials and major TV series such as We Own This City, Lady In The Lake, and Lioness.
As an arts administrator, I have had the pleasure of producing and directing The HMAA H.E.R.O.E.S. Project in Pennsylvania and producing and directing The VetStories Project in North Carolina, both of which told the stories of veterans from WWII – present day through original poetry, music, and dance. Additionally, I spent five years working as the Managing Director at Pointless Theatre Company in DC, and now, I am thrilled to be taking the reins as the new Artistic Director at Spotlighters Theatre here in Mt. Vernon.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What do I like least? Well…I could live without the parking headaches. 😉
What I truly love to do is work in the individual neighborhoods; they each have such unique characteristics. The old architecture, historical monuments, and brick streets are so elegant, and the waterways are simply beautiful. There are charming taverns and top-notch restaurants around every corner – so yummy! Baltimore definitely lives up to its Charm City nickname!
