Meet Hillary Deweese of Baltimore County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary Deweese

Hi Hillary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was first introduced to polymer clay when I was 9 years old. I would make little figurines for myself, family and friends. I didn’t revisit sculpting until 2017, when I started sculpting figurines of my friends’ pets. I created my brand name, Clay By Hillary, and website in 2021, and I even dabbled in resin art. However, I was still creating for friends and family. It wasn’t until October of 2024 that I expanded my audience by participating in local markets. These experiences have introduced me to a lovely and supportive community of fellow creators, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them! Most recently, I started leading sculpting workshops that are open to the public. I have really enjoyed teaching and spreading the fun of polymer clay and am excited to continue.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Time management was always a challenge while creating and also working a full time job. Then, the birth of my son in 2023 led to many more struggles with time management! Now, it’s all about taking advantage of naps and stealing time throughout the day to create and craft. I have had to work hard to manage a project schedule to not fall behind.

A new challenge arose when I decided to finally take the leap and participate in local markets, I had no idea where to start, how to find events, and set myself up for success. Meeting other creatives in real life and on social media has truly opened up so many opportunities for me. The sharing of knowledge and experiences is invaluable.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create hand sculpted, polymer clay gifts and accessories. While I will always love creating figurines first and foremost, not everyone loves knickknacks. This has led to creating more practical items. I started with adding clay jewelry to my inventory, but I am always asking what other practical things I can make from clay so that there is something for everyone at my shop! This mindset has allowed me to make bookmarks, hair clips, pins, key chains, and, most recently, a custom necklace charm bar.

Some of my items use clay cutters, which are like cookie cutters, but for polymer clay. However, what sets me apart and what I’m most proud of are my hand sculpted items. My custom pet charms are popular, and I love sculpting and painting all the tiny, unique details that make each pet different.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I have always wanted to wake up excited about what the day is going to bring, and now I get to experience that every day. To me, that happiness and fulfillment is success. Everything else is a byproduct of that success.
