Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina N’Diaye.
Hi Sabrina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Sabrina N’Diaye (pronounced “in-Jie”). If I were to collapse my professional story into one sentence it would be, “I make circles”. I am the founder of the Heart Nest Center for Peace and Healing in Baltimore, Maryland. There, I lovingly serve women, couples, other healers, and small groups. I am also the co-founder of Our Village Roots, a non-profit organization devoted to serving the African diaspora.
I believe that each one of us has a divine purpose. I can trace my unique purpose back to the age of three, when I befriended a severely disfigured and disabled teenage girl that the entire neighborhood had discarded. As a little person, I assumed a caretaking for my beloved maternal grandmother, the woman who would eventually guide my pen in the writing of my spiritual memoir, Big Mama Speaks: Love Lessons from a Harlem River Swan. I am here to guide others in their healing journey, to hold people in sharing their stories, and to serve as a bridge between multiple communities.
I began my career working in the New York City foster care system at the height of the AIDS crisis. That paved the way for my capacity to hold communities in the midst of their sorrow.
For thirteen years, I served as a senior faculty member of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine, where I taught the art of self-care to healthcare professionals and community leaders around the globe. As Center faculty, I responded to community trauma in Las Vegas, Houston, the Pine Ridge Reservation, New York City, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, Central Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and the US Capitol Police. My final project at CMBM was as a lead clinician, teacher and guide for incarcerated men and women in Indiana.
A passionate storyteller, I am a strong advocate for the power of narrative in the healing process. I believe that sharing stories is a powerful tool for connecting with others and fostering community healing. This belief is central to my workshops and public speaking engagements, where I encourage participants to explore and share their own stories as pathways to personal and collective healing.
I have facilitated hundreds of groups and workshops around the world. Her many audiences include police departments, flight attendants, healing artists, peacebuilders, refugees, and reformed gang members. I recently facilitated Jerusalem’s Daughters, a peacebuilding group for Jewish, Muslim, and Christian women, in response to the current crisis in Palestine. I was the lead facilitator of 99 Clay Vessels, A Muslim Women’s Storytelling Project, based on the 99 names of Allah.
I 100% believe that psychotherapy is an act of love. What I love about being a therapist is that I have this wonderful opportunity to remind people that their biggest goal is to return to love. Therapy can serve as an opportunity to fill in the gaps of love that we didn’t get when we were children or even when we were parents. I strive to help people to really know themselves to forgive themselves to hold the incidences of their lives that shape them through the lens of mercy and understanding. I guide the clients and groups that I serve people into understanding that their trials their struggles help to shape them. Each of us has the capacity to transmute the our sorrow into a story of triumph and to transmute our indecisiveness and missteps into an opportunity to really deepen our relationship with the god of our understanding. Then we know that everything that happens for us is for us. We don’t have to run from the past and we don’t have to wallow in resentments or separation.
Today, I access my divine purpose through guiding other healers in living their purpose. I’m super passionate about supporting people in writing their spiritual memoir as a means of understanding themselves and acceptance of their beauty and purpose. what has shaped them into the human that they are today
I’m also aware of the fact that I am an imperfect healer – still growing, and still getting to know myself more deeply. Each day, I commit to loving myself more deeply than the day before. And I’m loving the journey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is no such thing as a smooth road – life is difficult. Life poses challenges. Life pushes us forces us to look at ourselves Life can sometimes knock us down. As a therapist,my life has forced me to see people under the most challenging of circumstances, to sit with people who have committed horrible crimes, to love the unlovable. This has not been easy and yet I have committed myself each and every day to look past what’s in front of me to see through the lens of mercy, to see what is possible. My faith tradition says that we were born to make mistakes I lean on that teaching daily. It helps me to keep standing up to keep coming back when life throws the inevitable challenges my way.
