Conversations with Carol Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Edwards.

Carol Edwards

Hi Carol, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey and passion for photography have grown and transformed over the years. It all began in 2009 when I assisted my son Jason with his school photography projects. Over time, Jason developed his own side business, and I was fortunate enough to support him as his backup photographer. This experience fostered my interest in photography and motivated me to expand my skills and knowledge.

To deepen my understanding and proficiency, I pursued formal education in the field, taking classes at the Academy of Art University and the Community College of Baltimore County. These courses have been instrumental in honing my technical abilities and artistic vision.

I am known for my exceptional technical expertise and creative flair in photography. My diverse portfolio spans various genres, including corporate, commercial, editorial, and event photography.. Notably, I have worked on promotional events for major companies like MTV, and Apple Tv, as well as PR firms from New York to Baltimore.

In addition to my professional work, I am deeply committed to social causes. One of my most cherished projects is ” A Journey Through Her Lens”, an annual fundraiser dedicated to supporting victims of domestic violence. This project is a personal mission inspired by my own experiences as a survivor of domestic violence and my time in the Help USA shelter system in NYC. My goal is to give back to the community and amplify the voices of those who feel unheard as they navigate the shelter system. Each year, I organize the collection of hygiene products to create care packages for victims who enter the system with very little or nothing.

Through my photography, I aim to bring to light discussions that are often silenced, making them open and accessible. Beyond my photography career, I am also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Zeta Chapter. I strive to embody the values of scholarship, service, and community engagement. By joining this organization, I engage a broader audience within the D9 community, focusing on the community and education system.

My unique blend of psychological insight and photographic skill ensures that my work is not only visually stunning but also deeply perceptive and impactful.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a survivor of domestic violence, I have experienced firsthand the challenges many of us endure, often feeling under and unseen. While shelters provide a necessary refuge, the path to recovery and rebuilding one’s life requires much more,

Motivated by my own experiences, I have embarked on a project aimed at reading awareness and providing tangible support to those affected by domestic violence. This initiative involves collaborating with survivors to share their stories through powerful imagery that captures the harsh realities that often go unnoticed. To support this project and cover expenses, I have actively sought donations and organized art gallery exhibits, which also serve as a platform.

However, I have faced obstacles along the way, including challenges with local vendors who previously supported my efforts. Now state they can no longer print images that explicitly promote violence. Having others block works for soliciting donations on social media. Despite the setbacks, I remain committed to advocating for and assisting victims. I dedicate my time to calling, texting, and personally showing up for individuals who need help, doing everything possible to ensure they feel heard and supported.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in portraiture. Having the ability to capture the true essence of individuals by transforming the way they see themselves through my lens. I love working with people and helping them discover a new perspective on their own beauty and uniqueness. Im proud of each session is an opportunity for me to reveal a different side of my subjects, creating portraits that are both personal and striking.

Unlike traditional photographers, I focus on capturing authentic emotions, using lighting, or integrating storytelling. This allows me to create images that are not only visually stunning but also deeply personal and meaningful.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
