Daily Inspiration: Meet Amber August

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber August

Hi Amber, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I would like to think that I was born to be some kind of creative, any kind really. I began singing at an early age–according to my mom, I hummed before I could speak–and I loved writing these fantastical short stories, heart wrenching poems, and acting out scenes that I created in my head. Growing up, I was surrounded by teachers, family members, and friends who saw this light in me that they wanted to help cultivate. And so, I was introduced to different after school programs and summer opportunities that led me to the Baltimore School for the Arts. After graduating in 2016, I was prepared to be “somebody,” and while it didn’t turn out exactly the way I had planned it, I’m incredibly grateful for my path, which led me here.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the road has been far from smooth, but I’m used to potholes (Baltimore, do better.) I’ve encountered setbacks financially, emotionally, and mentally. Not to put you all in my business, but there is something particularly soul-crushing about being an expressive person who is forced to work a corporate, dead end job just to make ends meet time and time again, while still not being sure of if your art will resonate with the right audiences.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the host of the Love Groove Festival here in town, and I am also a singer and songwriter. I’m known for creating impromptu songs at the end of each set that I do with crowd participation. I’m most proud of my growth as an artist; I try new things and I’m much less afraid of failure. And I would say, what sets me apart is my ability to connect with just about any crowd.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Baltimore’s rich history and culture. I think we have the potential to be one of the greatest hubs for creativity and innovation if we invested more into our underserved communities. And what I like least, as I’ve mentioned before, are the goddamn potholes.
