Check Out Michael Haskins Jr’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Haskins Jr

Hi Michael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, my father owned and operated an urban apparel brand, and my mother worked in banking. My interest in the clothing business and titling it Currency directly reflects my childhood. Where I am today is a result of consistent sharing of the Currency Brands’ vision through content and/or physical activations. I’d say my “dreams” of developing a brand identity and presence that contributes to Baltimore being more attractive to the creative class have led me to be apart of some groundbreaking projects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been many struggles, but the one that weighs the most is the recurring thought: ‘Am I in the wrong city for this?’ It’s a personal mental struggle, especially when it comes to our retail experiences—where many either frown at the price points or act like they shouldn’t touch anything.

Beyond that, another challenge is the lack of successful examples in Baltimore that truly compare to what Currency Studio represents. That means there aren’t many mentors to turn to—no one who has already walked this path and can offer insight or support just by having been there before. With that comes a gap in infrastructure, making it harder to navigate business growth and long-term sustainability while balancing creative ambition.

On a more fundamental level, another challenge has been failing to fully embrace the business mindset. I often find myself prioritizing creative expression in an environment where that constant creativity isn’t always well received.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I design, I creative direct, I develop. I mostly think about things and then figure out how to bring them to life. Well, I think out loud, and my wife, who is very hands-on and holds every hard skill that complements my visions, helps ground my ideas in reality—turning concepts into tangible outcomes.

I specialize in brand building, creative direction, retail experiences, and design. I don’t specialize, though I’ve recently gotten into real estate development—all with a strong focus on bridging culture, design, and commerce. Almost all of my work blends art, architecture, and storytelling to create spaces and products.

I’m known for Currency Studio, an emerging designer brand influenced and driven by Art & Architecture. I have a lot of friends with unique businesses that come to me often as a source of inspiration. I’m mostly proud to be a living and breathing positive influence to those who create beautiful spaces and products for people. Especially those doing so in my resident city, Baltimore.

I see great value in history, I see great value in having a range of works, and I’m not embarrassed to be and represent all the things I can imagine.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
This is complex, as I’m in a few industries. To save myself here, I’ll speak to what I see for Baltimore. I see most industries evolving due to the lack of progression over the years. Baltimore is this overlooked city for, let’s say, fashion, music, art, and unique development projects, I think that will change, and I foresee heavy migration to Baltimore of the creative class for sure. It’s cheaper than all major cities; there is a charm, and enough is happening to find your place and your people.
