Meet Leticia Nortey of Expanding Boundaries International, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leticia Nortey

Leticia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins in 2008 when I was a first-generation African student at Morgan State University, driven by the dream of exploring the world through education. That year, I had the life-changing opportunity to study abroad in China, immersing myself in a culture that expanded my understanding of the world beyond the classroom. This was followed by a remarkable experience in the Caribbean and later, earning my Master’s degree in the UK. Each of these opportunities profoundly shaped my worldview, showing me the immense value of cross-cultural education—and the barriers that keep so many from accessing these transformative experiences.

When I returned home after my time in China, something unexpected happened. For weeks, I struggled to put my experience into words. The questions from friends and peers weren’t just about my travels—they stemmed from their belief that such opportunities were unattainable for themselves. Many, particularly from underrepresented communities like mine, were held back by societal myths and systemic barriers around studying abroad. This realization weighed heavily on me, sparking an overwhelming sense of responsibility to share my story and help others understand that these dreams could be within their reach.

Initially, I started small, hosting informal talks in local libraries where I shared my experiences and addressed common misconceptions about international education. The more I engaged with students and families, the more I saw the need for a lasting, structured effort to break these barriers. This vision came to life in 2014 when I founded Expanding Boundaries International (EBI). What started as a grassroots initiative is now a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through STEAM education, global opportunities, and cross-cultural learning.

At EBI, we specialize in bridging the gap between education and opportunity, particularly for underserved communities in the U.S. and Ghana. Our programs include Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) activities, study abroad programs, and cultural exchanges. For example, our Brenda A. Brown Passport Scholarship helps students obtain their first passport, opening the door to international possibilities. Our STEAM Exchange program creates cross-continental collaborations where students in places like Baltimore and Ghana work together to solve real-world challenges. These initiatives are designed to spark curiosity, build skills, and inspire students to imagine a future far beyond their immediate surroundings.

One of the driving forces behind my work is my own experience as an immigrant. I moved to the United States from Ghana at the age of 15, and I vividly remember using a computer for the first time after arriving here. That small moment opened up a world of possibilities for me. Today, there are still students in Ghana learning without access to basic technology. I know what a difference it made in my life, which is why I’m committed to giving others access to the tools and opportunities that can empower them too. The support and opportunities I received in the U.S. inspired me to pay it forward, creating EBI as a way of giving back to both the community that shaped me and the one I left behind.

But the road hasn’t always been easy. Running a mission-driven organization has meant late nights, early mornings, and moments of doubt. There were times I dreamed of escaping the responsibilities altogether, imagining a simpler, quieter life. Yet, every time a student receives their first passport, tackles a STEAM project, or expresses excitement about their future, I’m reminded of why I can’t stop. It’s these moments of transformation that make the challenges worthwhile.

Today, EBI stands as a beacon for innovation and global citizenship, reaching students from Baltimore, Maryland, to Tema and Ejura in Ghana. Through our programs, we’re not just teaching skills—we’re reshaping mindsets, inspiring the next generation to think critically, act boldly, and dream big. What sets us apart is our deep connection to immigrant and minority communities and our commitment to creating equitable, inclusive opportunities for all.

I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come, but I know this is just the beginning. Our vision is to create a future where every child, no matter their background, has access to education and opportunities that empower them to become thoughtful, capable global citizens. At EBI, we believe education knows no boundaries—and through our work, we’re helping young people transform their own lives while leaving a lasting impact on the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t been easy—after all, nothing worthwhile ever is. One of my greatest challenges has been confronting my own fears and self-doubt. For years, the fear of rejection held me back, making it incredibly difficult to seek funding or support. Overcoming that internal barrier has been one of the hardest yet most rewarding parts of this journey. Learning to believe in myself and stretch beyond my limits is an ongoing process. Each day, I see progress, and for that, I’m deeply grateful. I’ve come to understand the importance of giving myself grace and celebrating even the smallest victories along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Expanding Boundaries International (EBI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth through equitable access to cross-cultural and technological education. We specialize in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) activities, study abroad opportunities, and cultural exchange programs. Our mission is to inspire innovation, foster global citizenship, and break down barriers that limit access to transformative educational experiences.

What sets us apart is our deep connection to immigrant communities in the United States. Many of us, including myself, Leticia Nortey, are immigrants who are passionate about giving back to the community that has provided us with immense opportunities. I first started using a computer at the age of 15 after relocating from Ghana to the U.S., and today, there are still students in Ghana learning without access to computers. These experiences, along with the countless opportunities afforded to us, fuel our drive to give back and create change.

Brand-wise, we are most proud of our ability to inspire change and open doors for students who might not otherwise have access to these opportunities. We want readers to know that EBI is more than an organization—it’s a movement to cultivate skillful, empathetic, and respectful global citizens. Whether through our STEAM Exchange program, mentorship opportunities, or international collaborations, we are dedicated to shaping a future where education knows no boundaries.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising that most people might not know about me is that, honestly, I’d rather be sleeping than doing all the work we do! There are days when the weight of responsibility feels so heavy that I’ve genuinely fantasized about relocating to a new planet—somewhere no one knows me, and I have no obligations or the constant drive to serve. But despite those moments, it’s the love for our youth and the duty to make a difference that keeps me grounded and moving forward.
