Hi Briena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Briena Brinay, a multi-medium artist hailing from Detroit, MI, discovered her passion for the arts early in her childhood after relocating to the DMV region. Her love for dance flourished as she took the lead in various school performance clubs and recreational teams, shaping her artistic identity until the age of 18. Following a pivotal decision to drop out of college, Briena fully immersed herself in her true calling, channeling her creativity into music, film, and her entrepreneurial venture, Blissful Vxxisions.
Now in her late twenties, Briena is a dynamic force aiming to expand her influence as a creative director, event curator and artist under the name “PAXXIØN”. With a foundation rooted in dance and a diverse range of artistic pursuits, she brings a unique perspective to her projects, seamlessly blending mediums to create immersive experiences. Briena’s journey is a testament to her resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of her creative endeavors.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never a smooth road when you’re pursuing arts like this with no financial backing or family support. Affording all of my endeavors was always an obstacle, but never one I couldn’t handle. As I moved through different mediums throughout the years, i accumulated various production skills that automatically made me more valuable to my ultimate craft of music and the team I’ve built. Art is like languages, you almost become bilingual after dabbling into everything. I utilized service trading and taking on marketing, editing, choreography and conceptualization upon myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in production, primarily film and music. My two names hold two different sides of my creative identity. Briena Brinay being the more of the behind the scenes roles that fall under Blissful Vxxisions llc, while PAXXIØN is the musician — one encapsulates predominantly feminine energy while the other thrives under masculinity. I’ve always thought of the divide to be similar to the Donald Glover / Childish Gambino dynamic. My music identity has always been inspired by 90s/Y2K African American culture mixed with East Asian Influences. I’ve always prided myself on consistency and quality, no matter how much or how long it may take.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I would definitely describe myself as a risk taker! Most of the time, I am pursuing a vision that has never been done before, making it hard to pitch & get others on board. More often than not, people only appreciate a risk if it WORKS. And when you are your own manager, marketer, curator, choreographer, stylist, MUA, writer & director — it’s definitely a risk to do all at once while still being the artist! It is tedious and can be overwhelming but the creative control is worth the blood sweat and tears. Rob Silver & Kxng Vision have always been my dream team, supporting every risk I take!
