Hidden Gems: Meet Diego Ortiz of Silverback Stripes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Ortiz

Hi Diego, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story is deeply rooted in the desire for personal growth, love for my family, and the commitment to building a meaningful legacy for my children. As an entrepreneur, a former police officer in Peru, and a father, every stage of my life has taught me valuable lessons that I apply to everything I do today.
My first major professional decision was to serve as a police officer, a career that taught me the importance of discipline, resilience, and community service. I reached the rank of captain before retiring, specializing in training and instruction. This experience prepared me to face the challenges of leadership in other areas of my life.
My story with Silverback Stripes begins at home, with my children as my main inspiration. Six years ago, they discovered their passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a sport that has not only taught them discipline and resilience but also strengthened our family bond. Seeing how the sport positively influenced them, I knew I wanted to create something that would support not only them but also the entire BJJ community. Additionally, a minor back and knee injury prevented me from practicing the sport with them, but I wanted to be part of their growth in this wonderful discipline.
That’s how Silverback Stripes was born, a brand that symbolizes the strength of family and the tribe you choose. The silverback gorilla, our symbol, represents that powerful connection: the leader who protects and guides its troop while working with strength and strategy. I wanted every Silverback Stripes product to reflect those values and for our customers to feel like they were part of something bigger. An extra detail about our logo is that it is made up of five puzzle pieces representing us—a solid base forming the peak of a mountain at the top.
From the very beginning, we have worked hard to build a brand that not only offers high-quality rash guards and shorts but also serves as a pillar in the BJJ community. Our main focus is on design and functionality, ensuring that every garment meets the sport’s standards while also reflecting the competitive and collaborative spirit that characterizes BJJ.
We are proud to partner with outstanding athletes like Pat Downey, whom we sponsor with custom gear for his fights, including an exclusive line of rash guards with his name, PDIII. UFC fighters like Dylan Budka, a Baltimore kid who has pushed himself to achieve his dreams and now gets to fight at the highest level. On the other hand, we also sponsor MMA fighters and athletes who are just starting their careers and looking to grow alongside us. Additionally, we have established strategic partnerships with gyms such as AMT Muay Thai, Monroe Hall BJJ, and community projects like Agoge Project who provide after school services to the youth in Baltimore. These collaborations are essential because they reflect our mission to support the community and give back to the sport that has given us so much.
Silverback Stripes isn’t just a brand; it’s a movement. Our designs are meant for those who face challenges on the mat but also in daily life, reminding them that they are never alone.
Although Silverback Stripes is the center of my focus, I am also involved in other initiatives that reflect my values and passions. I lead T&IL Cleaning Services, a cleaning company committed to quality and employee well-being. I’ve created a YouTube channel, Silverback Dad, where I share my fishing adventures and family moments. Additionally, I am working on a podcast with friends to explore topics like police cases and advice for immigrants. I also dedicate time to being a soccer coach at Pipeline Soccer Club, something that allows me to connect with young people and teach them fundamental values like perseverance and teamwork.
My journey to where I am today has had its challenges, but each one has strengthened my purpose: to build a life and a brand that not only inspires my family but also those who are part of this community. For me, Silverback Stripes represents not just a line of products but a symbol of the power of unity, family, and dedication.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not, but every challenge has strengthened us and allowed us to grow as a brand. One of the biggest challenges we faced was making ourselves known in a highly competitive market like BJJ. At first, we were a small company with big dreams, trying to prove that we had something unique to offer. It took time to build our reputation and establish ourselves as a trusted and authentic brand in this community.
Another significant challenge has been accepting that we can’t please everyone. However, we learned to focus on what really matters: ensuring that those who know us understand who we are and what we represent. Today, we can proudly say that our brand is recognized for its commitment to quality, innovative design, and the values we share with BJJ and the Combat Sports Community.
Along the way, we’ve also faced the challenges of leading a growing brand, such as maintaining quality in every product and adapting to the needs of our customers. We’ve designed custom rash guards for amazing projects and communities, and we are currently working on new projects that have us excited for what’s to come.
The learning never stops. Every design, every collaboration, and every new step brings challenges, but they also remind us why we do what we do. From the beginning, Silverback Stripes has been more than just a clothing brand; it’s a way to unite people, celebrate collective effort, and represent the strength of family—both the one you’re born into and the one you choose.
Looking back, I can say that every obstacle, no matter how difficult, helped us get to where we are today. We continue learning, growing, and moving forward with the certainty that the best is yet to come.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
It’s essential to recognize the people who have been pillars in the building of Silverback Stripes and who have left a mark on this project.
First, I want to give a special acknowledgement to my children’s coaches, both those who guided them in the past and those who are currently with them. Their dedication and effort have not only shaped my children as athletes but also as individuals with strong values. Without their patience, knowledge, and example, this journey would not be the same.
I also want to thank every member of the Silverback Stripes troop—a remarkable group of collaborators, sponsored athletes, and partners who bring their best to every step we take. From designers and production teams to athletes and communities like AMT Muay Thai, Monroe Hall BJJ, and Agoge Project, each of you is an essential part of this family.
To our customers and every member of the Silverback Stripes family, thank you for trusting us and proudly representing what we stand for. You are the reason we continue growing and evolving. Every comment, purchase, and message of support drives us to give our best.
Finally, to all the parents and families in this community: OSS. This greeting isn’t just a word—it’s a recognition of the respect, effort, and resilience we share in this journey.
One last message I’d like to share is directed at parents: If you’re looking for an activity that will positively transform your child’s life, don’t hesitate to explore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This sport doesn’t just strengthen the body—it builds character and sharpens the mind. On the mat, children learn discipline, patience, and how to rise after every fall—skills that will serve them for life.
BJJ fosters a supportive community where respect and camaraderie are the foundation. Coaches, teammates, and the environment provide children with a safe space to grow and build confidence. As a parent, I’ve seen firsthand how this sport has impacted my children, equipping them with tools to overcome challenges and develop strong character.
For everyone already part of this community and those considering joining, remember that Silverback Stripes isn’t just a brand—it’s a family that celebrates the power of unity, dedication, and the fighting spirit. We will continue to work hard to represent those values in everything we do.
OSS.
