Meet Nia Simone of BOWIE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nia Simone

Hi Nia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been immersed in musical culture and deeply inspired by musicians. My journey began in grade school, where I discovered my passion for singing. In middle school, I performed with two music groups, and in high school at Bowie High, I showcased my talent through talent shows and coffeehouse performances. It was during this time that I met my first manager and had the opportunity to work with a well-known group called “No Stallin” as their first lady. I released a few songs, which began to create buzz around my name and my artistry.

I took my love for music to the next level at Bowie State University, where I further honed my craft by taking vocal and piano lessons and teaching myself additional skills. Toward the end of high school and throughout college, I worked with a second manager and began recording music in preparation for a release. However, things didn’t go as planned, and I had to learn to adapt and pivot my approach.

In 2022, I decided to take a leap of faith and independently assemble a new team to work on my first EP. On November 11th, 2022—a significant date for me and my favorite angel number—I released *Honey Love,* my debut EP. I planned and executed my release and listening party, marking the start of a new chapter in my career.

Since then, I’ve joined Grammy U, which has opened doors to incredible opportunities, including attending Recording Academy events and Grammy master classes in LA. These experiences have allowed me to expand my network, gain invaluable knowledge, and fuel my growth as an artist. This year, I’ve focused on performing and building exposure, and now I’m gearing up to release new music in 2025.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most significant challenges I faced in my career came early on when I was just 16 years old and preparing to launch as an official artist under the guidance of a manager who was funding my music career. As we moved closer to my debut, we encountered a major disagreement about the content they wanted me to perform. The lyrics and themes they pushed for did not align with my values, and despite the potential opportunities that staying with the manager could have brought, I made the difficult decision to walk away.

At such a young age, standing up for myself in a situation where I had much to gain from staying was a defining moment. I chose to prioritize my integrity over immediate success, understanding that my self-respect was worth more than compromising my values for fame. This experience taught me the importance of staying true to myself, even when it meant taking the more challenging path.

In the aftermath of parting ways with my manager, I had to take on a much larger role in managing my own career. I learned how to coordinate events, budget effectively, negotiate deals, and leverage industry relationships to continue pursuing my passion on my own terms. This experience not only deepened my understanding of the music industry but also instilled in me the confidence to navigate challenges independently.

Looking back, I am confident that I made the right choice. The experience reinforced the importance of aligning my work with my personal values and taught me invaluable skills in self-management and perseverance. These lessons continue to guide me as I sponsor my own career and move forward with the confidence that I can achieve my goals while staying true to who I am.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am currently a full-time artist, but my professional background extends beyond the stage. I’m trained in administrative work and have developed a specialty in event planning, which allows me to channel my organizational skills and creativity into impactful projects. Through my Nia Simone Cares Organization, I’ve found a way to support other artists by helping them bring their visions to life, whether it’s planning release parties, showcases, or other creative events.

What makes me most proud is the ability to transform ideas into reality. From conceptualizing an event to managing all the intricate details, it’s incredibly rewarding to see a vision take shape and come to life. Whether I’m performing on stage or working behind the scenes, I’m always driven by the power of connection, creativity, and collaboration.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think the most surprising thing about me is how multi-talented I truly am. Beyond being an artist, I have a deep love for cooking and have even considered selling plates at one point. I also enjoy editing and interviewing, skills I honed during my college courses and internships, particularly at Prince George’s Community Television (PGCTV), where I gained hands-on experience in media production.

I’m also a bit of a dreamer. I find peace in meditating, journaling, and envisioning my future. One of my favorite pastimes is watching nighttime videos of New York City and its vibrant residents—it’s a place I hope to call home, even if only for a chapter of my life. These creative outlets and moments of reflection fuel my artistry and keep me inspired.
