Today we’d like to introduce you to Derryck Mccauley
Hi Derryck, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My childhood in Kentucky was marked by the absence of my father. He left when I was very young, leaving a void in my life. My mother raised me alone, facing the challenges of single parenthood. Later, my stepfather provided a loving and stable presence in our home, but his untimely passing left a deep impact on me.
Years later (after relocating to Baltimore, Md), my biological father re-entered my life. However, his struggles with addiction created a tumultuous and unpredictable environment. This period was filled with instability and disappointment.
While our relationship ultimately deteriorated, I have learned to accept the past. I hear that he has found sobriety and is at peace. Though I sometimes yearn for the father-son bond I never had, I acknowledge his humanity and the complexities of his life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My transition from military service presented significant challenges. I experienced a profound period of depression following my discharge, grappling with feelings of guilt over my relative success compared to others. The contrast between my personal circumstances and the hardships faced by my community – marked by widespread poverty, drug addiction (which tragically impacted two members of my family), and a general sense of despair – further exacerbated my emotional distress.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
