Daily Inspiration: Meet Devante Capers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Devante Capers

Hi Devante, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello everyone, many of you already know me, I’m DeVante Capers. creative artist and photographer from Maryland. Studied visual arts communication at Prince George’s Community College, which lead me in earning an associate’s degree and illustration certificate. And I’m diagnosed with high functioning autism.

Today, I’ve have vendor at many art venues selling my art and earning income. Now, I’m hosting my very first art reception this summer, The Artism Gallery. It has been my true goal to have my own art event since gradating college and now the hard work and dedication had led to this big forever changing moment. The word Artism mean me as an artist with autism. My mission is to inspire many artists with disabilities and use art as a platform to describe my journey, change lives and share my passion and love for the arts one medium at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The Artism journey has been a great. Busy nonstop creating day after day, night after night. As of now, I have over 1500 art pieces from various styles from drawing, paintings, photography, graphics, etc. Plus I’ve been applying for vendor opportunities in the DMV metropolication area to promote my art and getting my name and brand out in the art community.

Being a vendor can have its ups and downs to hits and misses, but I’m still in the learning process and engaging with the community and telling them about myself and vision can helping build relationships and friendships along way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a full time independent artist that specializes in making one of kind original works of art. The best thing is that I enjoying merge different types of art into one with photography and graphics, painting and drawings, sculpturing and crafts, etc.

Also I love to write. Writing is therapeutic and sharing my words/stories with people to know what it’s like to be in my shoes. Plus I enjoy dancing very much. I’ve been dancing for 12 years and the styles are popping, locking, freestyle, etc. I took a mini break from dancing due to the pandemic, however, I had a broken leg and went to physical therapy to get back moving again, but as we got back outside, I started doing dance projects again. Dance can also tell stories through movement and help me overcome with shyness and communicate with other dancers.
Recently, I’m in therapy which is the best medicine for mental health and depression and help turn my life around in a healthy light.
I’m mostly proud of myself for making the call to go back to school and find my path in success. If I didn’t make the choice to go to school, all of this I’m doing now wouldn’t never happen today. I’m grateful for my family and friends who been in my corner since day one and help get this far.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most is that people are starting to see me as more than an artist, they are seeing me as a person who just wants to be accepted in the world instead being isolated because of being different and judgmental. I’m used to being alone and that’s ok. People will appreciate me and people will be careless. End of the day, I love myself, being a example of the gifts given, and I can become anything. I’m happy of being the great man I grew up to be. I’m a one man show and I will never change.
