Rising Stars: Meet Jordan “Jodey” Taylor of Washington DC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan “Jodey” Taylor

Hi Jordan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been drawn to the arts for as long as I can remember. Growing up during the golden age of music videos, I found myself captivated by the creativity and choreography in them, especially in Missy Elliott’s work. The way she seamlessly combined artistry and dance really inspired me. Interestingly, despite my passion, I didn’t have formal dance training as a child. I wasn’t one of those kids who grew up in a studio—most of what I learned came from practicing in my bedroom.

It wasn’t until after high school that I took my first dance class, and that’s when everything changed. I instantly fell in love with the experience. My instructor at the time was part of a dance company called Pace Setters and invited me to join them for a performance at a local church. Up until then, I had never danced in front of an audience, so I was a bit nervous. But the opportunity was too exciting to pass up.

The performance ended up being far more than I expected. It was on a stage, complete with lights, a live singer, and a band. It felt intimidating, but the moment I stepped on stage, everything clicked. As soon as I walked off after the performance, I knew—this is what I’m meant to do. That realization is what set me on my dance journey, and I haven’t looked back since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not having grown up training in a studio, I’ve often felt like an underdog, constantly trying to catch up to my peers. That sense of always being a step behind brought its own set of challenges, especially when it came to overcoming self-doubt. It’s been a continuous process of pushing through those feelings and proving to myself that I belong in this space.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional dancer, instructor, and owner of the clothing brand ProtoBoy. Over the past decade, I’ve worked extensively in the DMV area, and for the past two years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to dance in the NBA. In addition, I direct and lead my own Richmond-based dance collective, Kosmic Latte. I’ve also collaborated with various artists and contributed to commercial and film projects.

What sets me apart is my unique perspective and creative vision. I take great pride in the fact that my artistic approach is entirely my own, shaping everything I do—from choreography to performances. It’s this distinctiveness that defines my work and sets it apart.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d like to offer a bit of encouragement: whatever your passions are, nurture them. Those dreams and talents were placed in your heart for a reason. Trust in yourself, chase your dreams relentlessly, and never stop believing in your potential.
