Today we’d like to introduce you to Keiona Gorham.
Hi Keiona, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Embarking on a journey of empowerment and transformation, I have devoted over 15 years to coaching and mentoring women who are survivors of violence and abuse, youths, and professionals through the nurturing embrace of various houses of worship, businesses, and nonprofit organizations. In 2019, this passion blossomed into a full-fledged consultancy, a testament to the profound impact of human connection and growth.
My approach weaves together intimate one-on-one sessions, vibrant small-group interactions, immersive workshops, and soul-nourishing retreats. In these sacred spaces, I cultivate an atmosphere of enlightenment, encouragement, and accountability, guiding individuals toward their fullest potential.
The tapestry of tools I employ is as diverse as the human experience. Through the art of treasure hunting, we unearth the hidden gems of wisdom within life’s struggles. Verbal reformation becomes our compass, redirecting focus from stagnant rumination to purposeful forward movement. Vision casting emerges as our North Star, as we craft deeply personal vision, mission, and core values statements that illuminate the path ahead.
My coaching resonates particularly with professionals navigating life’s tumultuous waters. Having weathered my storms while steadfastly pursuing my aspirations, I offer not just guidance, but a profound understanding of resilience in the face of adversity. At its essence, wellness within humanity is a collective odyssey. It is the art of journeying together, hands intertwined, hearts aligned. We support one another through valleys and peaks, celebrating the myriad destinations reached along the way. In this grand tapestry of human experience, each thread of progress, no matter how small, contributes to a masterpiece of shared growth and fulfillment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey to this point has been forged in the crucible of adversity. As a survivor of childhood abuse and neglect, I’ve navigated the treacherous waters of intimate partner violence and grappled with the suffocating grip of familial and generational addiction and poverty. These experiences, while harrowing, have imbued me with a profound empathy and an unshakeable resilience. They serve not as mere chapters in my past, but as wellsprings of strength and understanding from which I draw to connect with and uplift others facing similar struggles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The BFA Institute, the consultancy I founded, stands at the forefront of organizational transformation with a powerful focus on antiracism education and the eradication of white supremacy culture in professional spaces. This innovative organization has developed a comprehensive approach that interweaves trauma-informed practices and liberation-based community building to create lasting, equitable change within organizations and institutions.
At the heart of the BFA Institute’s methodology is a commitment to identifying and dismantling the often subtle but pervasive manifestations of white supremacy culture in professional environments. Through individual professional life coaching and leadership cultivation programs, I guide professionals from all sectors in recognizing and challenging systemic racism and oppressive practices. This work is fundamental to fostering truly inclusive and equitable workplaces where all individuals can thrive.
The institute’s nonprofit consultation services take this antiracist approach a step further, helping organizations to not only improve their efficiency but also to critically examine and restructure their operations through an antiracist lens. This involves deep, often challenging work to uncover and address ingrained biases, inequitable policies, and exclusionary practices that may have gone unnoticed or unchallenged for years.
A distinguishing feature of the BFA Institute’s approach is my emphasis on community building using liberation practices. This involves creating spaces and processes that allow for authentic dialogue, collective healing, and collaborative problem-solving. By incorporating these practices, organizations can move beyond superficial diversity initiatives to foster genuine inclusion and belonging for all members, particularly those from marginalized communities.
My expertise in psychology, nonprofit management, and my personal experiences as a Black ciswoman navigating professional spaces bring invaluable insight to this work. My leadership ensures that the BFA Institute’s approach is not just theoretically sound but also grounded in the real-world understanding of the challenges and opportunities in creating antiracist, equitable organizations.
By partnering with the BFA Institute, the organization is committing to a transformative journey where we are not just aiming for incremental improvements but for a fundamental reimagining of your organizational culture and practices. This process will challenge you to confront uncomfortable truths, unlearn harmful patterns, and actively cultivate an environment that is not only trauma-informed and culturally inclusive but explicitly antiracist and liberatory.
Through this work, I aim to contribute to the broader societal movement towards justice and equity, starting within our own professional community.
