Meet Fatima Khan of Oslo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatima Khan

Hi Fatima, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In my artistic journey, I have become a conduit for storytelling, weaving together the threads of my personal experiences and cultural identity. As an Oslo-based artist of Pakistani origin, my creative endeavors are deeply rooted in the belief that art has the power to transcend borders, fostering unity and understanding.

My passion for art, nurtured since childhood, has evolved into a vibrant tapestry of self-expression, an extension of my identity—a mother, daughter, partner, and, above all, a woman. Through my art, I strive to share the rich tapestry of my life, drawing inspiration from the intricate layers of my cultural heritage and personal journey.

As the founder of Rungg Art Gallery, my mission is to infuse color into people’s lives through paintings that capture the beauty of life’s moments. “Rungg,” meaning color in my native language, serves as a testament to my commitment to presenting my world through art, transcending linguistic barriers, and inviting viewers to explore their emotional landscapes.

I believe in the power of art to break stereotypes and build bridges across communities. My journey as an artist is not just a personal pursuit, but a mission to represent my heritage with pride and authenticity. Through Rungg Art, I strive to add color and expression to people’s lives, using art as a universal language that transcends borders and fosters understanding. My dedication to this cause is rooted in the belief that art has the potential to create a positive impact, enriching not only my journey but also the lives of those who engage with my work.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating the art world and gaining recognition is often fraught with challenges, especially when art is frequently misunderstood or undervalued. One of the primary hurdles is the perception that art should merely be decorative—something that matches your curtains and upholstery. However, true art transcends aesthetics; it doesn’t have to be famous or widely accepted to hold value.

Art should speak to you, engage you, and create a dialogue. It’s about evoking emotions, sparking thoughts, and challenging perceptions. In a world where commercial success often overshadows artistic integrity, staying true to this belief can be difficult. Yet, it’s essential for artists who wish to create work that is meaningful and impactful, rather than simply marketable.

The journey to recognition involves not only creating art that resonates on a deeper level but also finding an audience that appreciates this dialogue. It requires perseverance, a willingness to push boundaries, and the courage to maintain authenticity in the face of a market that often favors the safe and familiar.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Beyond the canvas, I find purpose in contributing to societal well-being. From actively engaging in building schools for underprivileged children in Pakistan to conducting art therapy workshops for Ukrainian refugees, where creativity becomes a source of healing and solace. In my philanthropic endeavors, I am committed to using art as a medium for change. I collaborate with non-profit organizations on humanitarian grounds, contributing my artwork to support their causes and raise awareness about critical social issues. By aligning my passion for art with philanthropy, I strive to make a tangible difference in the lives of others and create a more compassionate world.

My artwork, presented at esteemed venues such as the Old Munch Museum, and the Pakistan Embassy, I proudly embrace the role of a cultural ambassador, using my art to promote a positive and nuanced image of Pakistan.

What does success mean to you?
My perspective on success is about discovering a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment in my work. It is more than just personal achievement. it’s about how my creativity and passion can serve a greater good.

This approach to success is not only enriching for me personally but also for the communities and causes I support through art and philanthropy.
