Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Smallow
Hi Adam, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The truth is I started my own law firm out of necessity, as I was let go of a legal job in Washington, DC during the aftermath of the Great Recession in 2009. I didn’t know where to turn other than taking a chance as a solo practitioner in the next closest city: Baltimore, Maryland. And from there, it took many years to mold my law firm into a scalable business. Growing the sales, marketing, operations and culture of a legal business over the years was my on-the-job M.B.A. and concepts that you do not learn in law school. I am grateful to colleagues around the country; some of them market leaders, who shared their approaches to running a legal business with me. Some had a flair for marketing and others were dialed in on the nuts and bolts of operation, systems and processes The rapid advancements in technology in the past decade also allowed us to grow rapidly, which includes our case management systems and our state of the art 24/7 Client Portal.
But, perhaps, the strongest foundation of our law firm is our relationships with some of the most highly skilled medical providers in the state of Maryland. These doctors, specialists and facilities have allowed our clients access to outstanding medical care without insurance coverage issues, scheduling issues or other administrative red tape. These are the types of medical providers to whom I would (and have) referred my friends and. family.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the first seven or eight years of the law firm fall under the expression “ignorance is bliss.” Truthfully, I was not equipped with the business skills to grow the law firm. I was just popping in and out of courtrooms everyday trying to help people. There was no vision, plan or budget in terms of running the day to day business and planning for future (and often uncertain) growth.
However, I attended a national legal conference in 2019, and walked through the doors and into an “ecosystem” that was the business of personal injury law. I met lawyers, marketers, digital experts and many others who would become instrumental in the evolution of Adam Smallow Injury Lawyers. Now, the real challenge began: investments in employees, marketing, technology and other infrastructure that would truly test my will to grow the business in a very competitive market.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Adam Smallow Injury Lawyers, our business’ mission is to provide a superior client experience for injured victims throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Our clear vision is to disrupt the practice of personal injury by offering clients high quality medical care and unsurpassed communication with their legal team, including access to our 24/7 state of the art client portal.
Maryland, in particular, has a sad history of attorney referrals to low quality medical providers throughout the state. Highly skilled medical care is our non-negotiable at Adam Smallow Injury Lawyers.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Once I entered a new “ecosystem” of attorneys, marketers and other legal partners who were focused on growing and scaling their legal businesses, risk taking became inevitable if I wanted to follow in their footsteps.
So, several years ago, I began making major investments in the business in order to lay a new foundation and prepare for the future. Most of these investments were financial in nature. So I became tolerant to risk very quickly as I staffed up with new team members and also signed contracts with new digital marketing partners, state of the art technology platforms and even business and growth coaching.
You need to believe in the results of the money you spend on your business. At Adam Smallow Injury Lawyers, we take risks every day but I prefer to view them as investments in order to succeed in a very competitive and rapidly evolving industry.
