Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebonee Mayo-Mitchell
Hi Ebonee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was a PhD student, I observed that much of the literature and focus in school districts on the college-going experiences of Black and Brown students primarily addresses those from low socio-economic backgrounds or very elite families. However, in regions like Maryland and DC, where many families are affluent and highly invested in their children’s futures—whether they are college-educated or first-generation—there’s a lack of access to the same resources available to others, such as programs like TRIO.
Recognizing this gap, I founded College Prep 365 in 2014 after graduating from Morgan State University in 2015. As an Independent Educational Consultant, I’ve visited over 3,000 colleges, gaining deep insights into what it takes for students not just to get accepted but to thrive, persist, and avoid transferring. My goal is to empower students to reach their full potential by providing them and their families with the guidance and resources needed to navigate the college admission process successfully.
I built my business by collaborating with PTAs and participating in various college fairs, always striving to make the daunting college application process more manageable. With the increasing competitiveness of college admissions, having a private college counselor can make all the difference. At College Prep 365, we leverage our expert knowledge and years of experience to help your student stand out, avoid common pitfalls, and make well-informed decisions in their college journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One challenge I’ve consistently encountered in business is the need to constantly prove my credentials, especially when my white counterparts aren’t held to the same standard. This disparity highlights a broader issue in our society where Black professionals are often viewed through a lens of skepticism. While reviews and statistics can validate expertise, the scrutiny faced by Black educational consultants is disproportionate and, frankly, disheartening. It’s crucial that we work towards a society where all professionals are judged by their merit, rather than race. We must do better.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
