Conversations with Hannah Grzymala

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Grzymala

Hi Hannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started dancing at the age of 4 and the rest is history. I grew to love dance and made the commitment to myself that I would keep it in my life no matter what. After training for years I chose to pursue dance on the collegiate level and was accepted into multiple colleges for dance with Marymount Manhattan College being the final decision. There I was immersed into not only a rigorous dance curriculum, but also the vibrant New York City atmosphere. I grew to love the city and my love for dance also grew and flourished. I have trained with many companies such as Martha Graham, Rioult Dance, Paul Taylor, worked as an Apprentice for Parsons Dance, and an Assistant for The Rockettes. These companies helped me immerse myself more and more in the dance scene of New York City. In 2019 I had made it to the final round of The Rockette auditions, but did not receive a call to join the company, I thought 2020 was going to be my year. My time at school though was cut short in 2020 due to COVID with me spending the last few weeks of my final Senior semester on Zoom back in Maryland. My path had to take a quick redirection. I now am on the flip side of it all and have been teaching dance for the last 5 years. I have grown to love educating dancers now and nurturing the next generation of artists. My own hopes of performing may have been shifted but I now find excitement seeing my own work come to life onstage.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
COVID shifted my plans of performing myself onstage. Everything performance based was literally shut down. Once moving back home during COVID I started to teach dance which shifted my career path.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I currently have multiple jobs. My mornings are filled with coaching fitness at Orangetheory with wake up calls at 3:45am, as well as teaching Barre and Pilates at Coppermine in Bel Air. I then teach dance most nights at Centre Pointe Performing Arts. Here I work with ages 7-18 teaching, choreographing, and rehearsing. I would like to think I specialize in Jazz, I love the personality you can put behind movements. I also in the Spring work as a Competition Judge with Inferno Dance. I have loved being behind the table adjudicating as it gives me a whole new perspective on how to teach and create. So you could say I have a pretty jam packed schedule sometimes working 4 different jobs in 36 hours. But it all makes me happy and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

How do you think about happiness?
Seeing the vision inside my head come to life onstage. I used to always want to perform but I think I now find just as much joy seeing other dancers fulfill my vision up on stage.
