Today, we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Freshour.

Carrie Freshour

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From surviving to thriving: The origins of my mission.

From a young age, I was driven by an insatiable curiosity—a deep, unyielding desire to make sense of the world around me. This curiosity was not born of academic interest but of a personal need to find meaning in the hardships I endured. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I became intimately familiar with pain, self-doubt, and the sense of unworthiness that can persist for a lifetime. These early experiences shaped me in how I understood myself and how I perceived others and the world.

I developed a unique ability to read emotional currents in a room, a skill honed by years of navigating my complex feelings. Guided by compassionate therapists who helped me understand and manage these emotions, I found my way into the field of psychology. My journey in this field was diverse and enriching, spanning residential treatment centers, educational institutions, healthcare settings, and government agencies. I started at the ground level, providing direct care, and gradually moved into leadership roles where I could guide both people and programs.

The Crucible of Leadership:  A pivotal moment in my career came when my family endured a devastating fire. At the time, I was juggling dual roles as the acting CEO and COO of an anti-trafficking organization—a role that demanded a deep understanding of trauma. Yet, as I navigated my trauma, I began to question whether our trauma-informed approach was truly effective. Despite the outpouring of kindness and empathy from those around us, I felt a disconnect between what we knew about trauma and how we applied that knowledge in real-life crises.

This realization was profound. The world does not pause for personal pain; payroll must be met, critical decisions must be made, and life moves forward. My journey of processing trauma did not fit neatly into the timeline of organizational needs. This stark discrepancy between theory and practice inspired a new chapter in my career, one where I sought to bridge this gap.

Transforming Pain into Purpose: After a period of reflection and healing, I recognized that the fire had not only consumed my physical possessions but also ignited a deeper passion within me. This was my opportunity to become the change I desperately wanted to see in the world. I committed myself to dismantling the stigma and shame that often surround trauma and mental health, both in workplace cultures and in personal relationships.

My mission became clear: to aid organizations and leaders in guiding individuals through their human experiences, equipping them with the skills to navigate difficult conversations, and fostering environments where compassion and understanding are at the forefront. I realized that while we have best practices backed by evidence and science, these practices often fall short—not just in mental health and healthcare but across all sectors, including corporate environments.

A Call to Courage and Vulnerability: In a world often clouded by bias and resistance to change, my mission requires both courage and vulnerability. I have seen how systemic bias and entrenched cultural norms can hinder the implementation of best practices. The fire that ignited within me is a testament to my belief that every challenge carries the seeds of meaning and opportunity, no matter how painful.

Today, I work tirelessly to break down barriers, shatter silence, and lead with unwavering grace. My journey from direct care work to leadership and clinical practice is not just a career path but a calling to disrupt shame, challenge systems, and transform pain into purpose.

A Lifelong Commitment to Change: My journey into clinical therapy is deeply rooted in my experiences of pain, resilience, and transformation. From the earliest memories of abuse and trauma to the determination to break generational cycles, I have been on a relentless pursuit of understanding and healing. The therapists who guided me were not just professionals; they were lifelines, and their impact was so profound that it propelled me into psychology and clinical social work.

My studies of adverse childhood experiences, multi-generational trauma, and evidence-informed practices have been supplemented by leadership roles where I seek to unravel the meaning of chaos and foster a culture of compassion. This journey is about more than just healing; it is about leading others through their pain and helping them to dismantle the internal voices of judgment and shame.

Today, my work reflects my deepest values. It is about asking questions, seeking to understand, and leading compassionately. It is about finding meaning in the hard and helping others do the same. My mission is not just to be a part of the change but to lead it, hoping that my efforts will inspire others to transform their pain into purpose, just as I have done.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Throughout my journey, I’ve faced countless obstacles and challenges that, at times, felt overwhelmingly stifling. There were moments of failure that led me to question my values, my worth, and even my right to lead others. The weight of my own pain and hurt often made me feel like an imposter. How could I guide others when I struggled to heal my own wounds?

How could I hope to make a difference in the world when I couldn’t even mend the dysfunction within my own family? These doubts were heavy, but they were also the catalyst for profound growth. I had to learn to forgive—not just others for their missteps and the incredibly painful words or actions they directed toward me, but also myself. Holding onto resentment only kept me tethered to the past, unable to move forward.

Accountability became a crucial part of my journey as I began to understand the deep connection between my past experiences and my present behaviors. I dug deep, embraced vulnerability, and confronted the harsh truths about how my body held onto the traumas of the past. Learning to regulate my responses, I reminded myself that I was safe and had the power to choose a different reaction, even if that choice had not been afforded to me before.

Becoming trauma-informed was not just a professional endeavor; it became a way of being. I learned to repair relationships, set boundaries, and speak up, even when it felt like no one else would. The conflict became less about confrontation and more about understanding—both my own reactions and those of the people around me.

Through this process, I discovered the strength not only to survive but to thrive, turning my pain into purpose and leading with a deep, compassionate understanding of the human experience.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Carrie Freshour Consulting?
I founded Carrie Freshour Consulting, LLC after a pivotal moment in my life—a devastating fire that shook my world. What started as a side hustle, speaking at conferences and helping others with program development and training initiatives, quickly became something much more significant.

I took the leap and dove headfirst into the growing disconnect I was witnessing across industries. There was a stark dichotomy between what organizations claimed to do, what their policies intended, and what actually happened in practice. This gap left people feeling burned out, underappreciated, and unheard in the workforce.

The pandemic only magnified these issues. The cracks in our systems that were once manageable became gaping holes, and it became painfully clear that we needed to address the crisis we were in. Our greatest resources—our people—were at risk; without them, we have nothing. It was time to break the silence and have the hard conversations that many avoided.

In my current work, I help individuals and teams maximize their potential, navigate system changes, and tackle the deeply rooted issues of workplace culture and mental health stigma. I bring over 25 years of experience as a clinical social worker, but what drives me are my lived experience and the lessons I’ve learned. I’m not afraid to engage in those tough conversations because that’s where real change begins.

My approach is trauma-informed, and I use change management and transformational leadership methodologies to develop tailored strategies that resonate with each unique client. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution here—just a commitment to meeting people where they are and helping them move forward.

Recently, I’ve also stepped into the world of writing. My first book was just published, and I’m excited to share that I’ll be a featured author in Transformative Leadership: Self Mastery for the New Voice of Business Success, which will be published in September. This book explores what it means to be a leader today and the importance of mastering oneself for business success.

For those interested, books purchased directly from my website will come signed—a small way to personally connect with those passionate about this work and want to take these ideas further.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
What truly distinguishes me as a leader and consultant is my deep empathy, resilience, and unwavering commitment to fostering real, lasting change. With over 25 years of experience, I bring a trauma-informed perspective that’s rooted in understanding both the complexities of human behavior and the nuances of organizational dynamics.

My approach is grounded in self-awareness and vulnerability, allowing me to connect deeply with individuals and teams while navigating the broader challenges. I’m adaptable, able to tailor my methods to meet each client’s unique needs, and I’m not afraid to have the tough conversations necessary to drive meaningful transformation.

My communication skills and visionary outlook empower others to embrace change and move forward confidently. I lead with integrity and a relentless commitment to continuous learning, ensuring that every solution I provide is effective and sustainable. My work is more than just fixing problems; it’s about inspiring growth, building trust, and creating environments where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
