Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleah Boykin
Hi Aleah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a girly girl into my look! So me and makeup was inevitable. At first, I hated my blends and the brands of makeup I chose just weren’t the right fit for me!!! On a quest to get better I ran to Youtube. After hundreds of videos, trial and error, doing my whole face, only to hate it and wash it off, I had a breakthrough.
My family and friends would come to me for makeup. While grateful, I knew I could do better. Shout out to my girls though. Thank you for letting me mess up your faces. LOL!
In 2019, I got so confident in my abilities, I decided to turn my hobby into my business. So Slay Beatz by Leah was born!
It was a slow start, but eventually clientele rose. I have been amazed that now I’m fully booked for the entire prom season every year. I’ve been selected to be the makeup artist for a number of bridals parties. I became the resident makeup artist for Baltimore County’s President of the National Forum of Black Public Administrators. I will say my journey has just started, and even after all of this, I’m still at the beginning.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no. Yes, being a makeup artist has its smooth roads but, because I love being a makeup artist so much, none of it ever feels like work. Each client whether old or new has been amazing in their own right. We literally have a time with each appointment. Full of inspiring words and laughter!! My clients are my heart.
The struggle along the way for me would be down time. Within a certain part of the year, mainly summer, a lot of people aren’t booking. It has became a normal thing. I actually understand more than people may know. I wouldn’t want to wear makeup in Baltimore’s heat myself. It can be very hot here.
I spend that time practicing on myself, offering my makeup classes, and perfecting my craft.
Sometimes, it’s difficult to get people to see my vision. I understand how important looking your best is.
People expect the Housewives or video vixen look. To be honest, I believe that EVERY WOMAN has beauty. My goal is to enhance and bring their beauty to light.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Makeup Artist. I am the owner and operator of Slay Beatz by Leah. I specialize in natural makeup with a side of glam. I’m essentially known for my natural beat. Contouring, eyebrows, lashes, and ombre’ lips.
Most importantly, empowering women!!!! When you leave Slay Beatz by Leah, you leave confident, and unlimited amount of self love, style, beauty, and a smile! What sets me apart from others is I’m teachable, and my drive for wanting to be better is relentless.
