Daily Inspiration: Meet Kojo Sarfo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kojo Sarfo

Hi Kojo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
So my story started at Augusta University where I was a student in the DNP program, a doctorate of nursing program where I was pursuing a degree to become a mental health nurse practitioner and a psychotherapist. While I was in this program, I developed a love for entrepreneurship and I created a clothing company called Abrantie & Signora, which allowed us to have a partnership with Mental Health America.

Once I graduated with my doctorate, I moved to Williamsburg, Virginia and began working in forensic psychiatry. After two and a half months of being in this role, I started posting videos out of boredom onto an app called TikTok. After posting consistently on TikTok for two and a half months, I was invited to a creator meetup in Los Angeles in February of 2020. And this meetup inspired me to become a full-time content creator. I returned from Los Angeles back to Virginia and dedicated myself to posting two to three videos per day on TikTok.

Shortly after my trip to Los Angeles, the pandemic happened and there became this huge emphasis on mental health and coincidentally I was posting a lot of mental health content. I began to quickly grow a following and after about 10 months, I decided to move to Los Angeles, California to pursue content creation on a more of a consistent basis. And at this time, I had 400,000 followers. I got to Los Angeles in January of 2021, and I’ve been here for the past three and a half years. Now my following has grown to over three and a half million followers, and we have a consistent following on the following platforms; TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. There were many difficulties along the way. When I quit my full-time job to become a content creator on a more consistent basis, I experienced financial hardships, especially with being a first-time entrepreneur and business owner. I had to operate without a stable income for the first time in my adult life, I had to deal with burnout, losing friends and relationship issues. However the struggles made all of my successes that much more worth it when I did experience small ones along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, I am releasing short form vertical skits online to help educate people about being neurodivergent and common mental health issues. Additionally, I am performing stand up comedy in Southern California and working to take my act on the road. I am also working on introducing a new podcast that we will be bringing to YouTube. Supporters can catch me on my Facebook show (Late Night w/ Dr. Kojo) that airs weekly at 6p PST/9p EST!
