Today we’d like to introduce you to Chevon Wright
Hi Chevon , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
About 15 years ago, I found myself in a doctor’s office due to shortness of breath, headaches, insomnia, weight loss, and more. That day, I was diagnosed with anxiety and given a prescription. Shortly after, I found a therapist. Therapy helped me discover the root of the diagnosis and its triggers. I was suffering from mental and emotional abuse in my then marriage, while managing a full-time corporate position, and while taking care of a home and toddler. It was incredibly hard to admit I needed help.
I understood from previous psychology courses and self studies, how common anxiety is. Despite the disappointment in learning of my diagnosis, I knew I could always lean on the support of my parents. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for their guidance while I navigated the demands of life and motherhood. They took the role of full-time grandparents seriously, and still do till this day. I am incredibly grateful for their consistent love and encouragement that allowed me the space to pursue my gifts while becoming the best version of myself, for my children.
I spent many days and nights researching alternative methods to regulate my nervous system. I didn’t like how the medicine disconnected me from reality and desperately searched for a more holistic regimen. My therapist suggested I try yoga. I found a class that incorporated tai chi, gentle movements and breathwork. I immediately fell in love with the power I would feel behind my breath and movement. I became so obsessed, that I would often practice a few times a day. At work, I would find empty offices or spaces I could lay a mat in between calls and meetings. I would take my lunch breaks at a studio, at the time located in the same building I worked in. In my free time, I picked up every yoga, meditation and breathwork book I could find and I studied. I went down rabbit hole after rabbit hole of esoteric knowledge and ancient spiritual teachings. I found something that sparked a fire in me, something that effortlessly grounded me, something I knew would change my life, forever.
After months of practicing, I found myself holding one on one and small group sessions as often as possible. It was informal and always free or donation based. I truly just wanted to practice the teachings. I knew that if it helped me, it could help someone else. I no longer even thought about prescription drugs. I found my breath and I wanted nothing more than to assist others in locating theirs. Full mind, body and soul alignment became my drug of choice.
The physical benefits of yoga is only a byproduct of the work done within. I committed to my daily practice and was inspired to seek a license to instruct these teachings. I always dreamt of having my own business but wasn’t sure of when or how I would get started. One day, I woke up after another stressful week of juggling life’s demands and an unpredictable layoff. I had been in the corporate world for 20 years and devastated with how it suddenly came to an end, yet later understanding it would pave the way into bringing my vision of holding healing spaces into the physical. I knew the layoff could be the answer to what felt like a lifetime of prayers. I wanted nothing more than to be more available to my children, to assist with their own mental and emotional wellbeing and to help others navigate ways to soften their nervous systems. My calling would not allow me to rest, it got louder and louder with each passing day, so I moved forward in faith. That week, I drove to Baltimore to apply for my LLC. This was during the start of the pandemic, so while the kids were home online learning, I was teaching myself how to run a business and offering online classes while the world stopped. Prior to the pandemic, shortly after receiving my 200HR-RYT, I instructed almost every day in various studios in the area.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, as I was managing a divorce of 18 years, while being an incredibly active Mother and gaining more clients as the days progressed. Since starting The Mystic Yogini LLC, I’ve been actively advocating and participating in holding safe and inclusive wellness spaces in the DMV area. I unfortunately experienced inequality in wellness centers in the Annapolis area, which sparked my mission to expand outside of where I trained, in an effort to create more safe spaces for all people, especially those marginalized by race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, etc. I learned that there is a dark side to some wellness spaces that market for diversity and inclusion, however, were indeed performative. I am an African-American woman who trained in a predominately white area. I witnessed firsthand discriminatory practices and raised several flags in outrage. Since then, I have been on the frontlines as a representative of radical change in the wellness industry. I am a firm believer in “good trouble.” Rep. John Lewis said it best and may he rest in paradise knowing so many of us continue the fight.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an Intuitive Healer and offer a myriad of services and practices to include Yoga, Guided Meditation, Intuitive Readings, Sound Therapy, Spiritual Counseling and more. I rely on my gifts of empathy, clairsentience, and clairvoyance to tune into my clients’ frequency. This allows me to better understand them and offer authentic support. I learned as a young child that I was different. I could hear, see and feel things beyond this dimension. It wasn’t until adulthood that I tapped into it further to better understand myself and to assist others on their spiritual journeys of enlightenment and purpose. I am most proud of guiding fellow clients and practitioners through an all levels accessible vinyasa style practice. The music and movements definitely set me apart from traditional teachings, as I love to collaborate with the universe in culturally rhythmic ways. My classes are grounding, fun and practical with a spiritual approach.
I am most proud of myself for overcoming some of the hardest challenges, for proving that a single mother can turn pain into power, and use it to build and elevate the frequency of a world in dark times. The opportunities, smiles and embraces received on a daily basis are confirmation that I am indeed on the right path and my work is indeed necessary.
What makes you happy?
Fulfilling the destiny God desires for me makes me happy. To know that my steps have been ordered and that I am in alignment with my highest self. I am in a constant state of gratitude for having such a strong and supportive family and community. I often find bliss in the mundane. I enjoy raising my children to be compassionate, emotionally intelligent, strong and discerning young adults. I love spending time outside, anywhere grass can be touched and trees can be hugged! I also enjoy music and how we connect to the vibrations of sound, from my Spotify playlists to my spiritual instruments. Balancing and protecting my energy through sound, yoga, meditation, and rest! Naps are sacred and truly liberating.
