Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Murphy.
Hi Brian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was not born in Maryland but got here as fast as possible. My family moved to Easton, on the Eastern Shore, when I was in second grade. I graduated from Easton High School, attended the University of Maryland on a full academic scholarship, and worked at Constellation Energy in Baltimore from 1999-2008. Along the way, I met the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, Joy, and convinced her to marry me in 2004. Constellation sent me to business school, and I graduated with an MBA in finance from the Wharton School in 2008. After leaving Wharton, I understood the impact of entrepreneurism and the need for moral investments in rural and low-income areas. So Joy and I started the Smith Island Baking Company on tiny Smith Island. We had to leave the island in 2016 for logistics and food safety reasons, but we bought and renovated an abandoned grocery store that we now call home. We’ve shipped hundreds of thousands of cakes, cake bites, tins of fudge, and ice cream nationwide through our website, SmithIslandCake.com. Smith Island Cakes is Maryland’s state dessert, and we are honored to be stewards of such a historic treasure. Joy and I have been blessed with seven wonderful children. Our lives have been a crazy, wild, and excellent ride, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I love who we are, what we do, who we do it with, and who we do it for.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Ha! Armed with ambition, grit, and an MBA from the Wharton School, we set out to found the nation’s premier online bakery on a tiny island in the middle of Chesapeake Bay. Smith Island is accessible by a 45-minute ferry ride, is eight miles offshore, and is home to about 200 people. What could go wrong?
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about The Smith Island Baking Co.?
