Today, we’d like to introduce you to Christian Smooth.
Hi Christian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey as a filmmaker, photographer, and AI artist began with a lifelong passion for storytelling. This passion led me to attend Morgan State University, where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Screen Writing & Animation. During my time at university, I honed my skills and developed a deep appreciation for the power of visual media to inspire, educate, and provoke thought.
Throughout my career, I’ve been driven by a desire to create content that makes a positive impact on the world. Whether it’s through thought-provoking narratives or innovative uses of technology like AI, I’m always seeking new ways to push boundaries and challenge myself creatively. This drive has led me to explore new mediums and techniques and to constantly evolve my craft.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many artists, I’ve faced my share of challenges and obstacles along the way. After college, I quickly realized that my real education in filmmaking was just beginning. I had to navigate the practical realities of getting projects off the ground, managing personalities, and dealing with last-minute setbacks.
One of the biggest struggles has been bringing projects to fruition. From securing funding to assembling the right team, so many moving parts need to be aligned. I’ve had experiences where things seemed to be on track, only to fall apart at the last minute. In those moments, I’ve had to think on my feet and find creative solutions to keep the project moving forward.
Another challenge has been managing the interpersonal dynamics that come with any collaborative endeavor. As a filmmaker, you’re working with a diverse group of people, each with their own personalities, work styles, and creative visions. Learning to navigate those relationships, communicate effectively, and keep everyone aligned toward a common goal has been a crucial part of my growth as a leader and creator.
On a personal level, I’ve also grappled with imposter syndrome – that nagging feeling that I’m not good enough or that I don’t belong. As someone who didn’t follow a traditional path into the industry, it’s been easy at times to doubt myself or question my place. But through it all, I’ve remained convicted in my abilities as a visual storyteller. I know that I have a unique perspective to offer and stories that need to be told.
Ultimately, I’ve come to see these struggles as an integral part of my journey. Each challenge has taught me valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my vision.
They’ve made me a stronger artist and a more compassionate collaborator. And while the road ahead will undoubtedly bring new obstacles, I feel equipped to face them head-on, armed with the lessons I’ve learned and the unwavering belief in the power of storytelling.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a multi-disciplined artist, I work across photography, filmmaking, and AI art creation. In each medium, I aim to tell compelling stories that shed light on the human experience. In my photography, I specialize in editorial and documentary work. I’m passionate about freezing moments in time that narratively encapsulate the essence of a person, place, or event.
Whether I’m capturing a pivotal moment in history or an intimate glimpse into someone’s life, my goal is always to create images that tell a story and evoke emotion. As a filmmaker, I’m known for creating character-driven narratives that explore people in surreal situations. I’m fascinated by how extraordinary circumstances can reveal deeper truths about the human condition. My films often blend reality and fantasy, using unique visual storytelling techniques to immerse the audience in the world of the story.
In the realm of AI art, I apply a similar approach but with the added freedom to let my imagination run wild. AI allows me to create images and scenes that might not be possible in the physical world but still resonate on an emotional level. I use this medium to explore abstract concepts, push the boundaries of visual storytelling, and challenge the viewer’s perceptions. When it comes to the work I’m most proud of, two projects stand out. The first is my award-winning film ‘Persistence,’ which tells a powerful story of resilience and the human spirit.
The second is my AI series, ‘Disposable Humans,’ which offers a thought-provoking commentary on society’s relationship with technology and the value we place on human life. However, the project that I’m perhaps most known for in the AI art space is my series of celebrities with regular jobs. This series went viral and sparked a lot of conversation about the role of fame and the ways in which we perceive public figures.
Ultimately, what sets me apart as an artist is my ability to bridge the gap between the real and the imagined, the every day and the extraordinary. Whether I’m working with a camera, a film crew, or an AI algorithm, my goal is always to create work that resonates on a deep, emotional level. I believe that storytelling has the power to connect us, challenge us, and change us, and I feel incredibly privileged to be able to do that work.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, I learned in a crisis, there is always an opportunity to create.
