Today we’d like to introduce you to Fletcher Cleaves
Hi Fletcher, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
” Fletcher Cleaves was involved in a tragic car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down due to a driver suspected of texting while behind the wheel. This traumatic incident caused him to lose his football scholarship but with faith, perseverance, and a year of intense physical therapy, he re-enrolled in school and graduated from The University of Memphis with a degree in Computer Science. Now as a professional motivational speaker, Fletcher has shared his testimony of overcoming adversity, safe driving, importance of education, and faith base living with ESPN, College Game-Day, and to over 500 high schools, colleges, and business. Fletcher is also a world traveler obtaining the nickname “The Wheelchair Nomad”. He travels to many countries living life to the fullest while also bringing awareness to accessibility issues in the travel industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This event left me paralyzed from the chest down, and I was challenged with the task of starting my life over. Now, a quadriplegic, I had to relearn everything in order to adjust to my new circumstances.
Following the accident, my family and I endured a number of obstacles, including both of my parents losing their jobs in order to become my full-time caretakers. However through all of the setbacks, I was determined to prevail. After a year of intense rehabilitation, I decided to re-enroll in school at the University of Memphis, where I attained a degree in Computer Science. My recovery helped me recognized that sharing my journey could not only motivate others, but also save lives which brings us here.
Everyone has a story. Some are blissful, while others are tragic. Mine, on the other hand, is full of triumph. I desire to share my experiences with hopes that more people feel empowered to endure difficult times and continue to fight for their dreams. Sure there were times when I wanted to give up, but I made a choice to overcome my challenges, believe in a prosperous future and motivate others to do the same.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional motivational speaker that speaks about overcoming adversity, the importance of safe driving, making smart choices, amongst other things!
I’m also known as a travel expert in the Travel community, focusing on disabled Travel! In the midst of doing this, I also show that life has no limitations by doing many tasks that people in wheelchairs don’t normally accomplish!
I am most proud of the fact that, even though I have been through a tremendous life-changing event, I refuse to never give up and live life to the fullest!
When it comes to what makes me different from everybody else… I do not feel that I am better than anyone, have any type of advantage… The only thing I feel that sets me apart from everybody else is that I didn’t quit! And I will never quit. That’s the only distinguishing quality.
Any big plans?
My future plans consist of continuously trying to become the best speaker I can, continuously develop the Travel community and show that no matter what you go through in life, you can still live life to the fullest, and also, I would like to get into acting lol
