Rising Stars: Meet Jasmine Iler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Iler.

Jasmine Iler

Hi Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
So I thought I wanted to be a doctor and so I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Morgan State University, but after college, I didn’t feel called to science or healthcare, so I spent time trying to figure out what was next for me.

I had created a small blog about black movies and music and having to promote it sparked my interest in Marketing, this was before social media marketing really became what it is now, so I decided to work on a Master’s in Marketing Management at the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Because I am someone who likes to try to do a variety of things, I consider myself to be well-rounded. All of my education and work experience is what shaped me and pushed me to where I am now. From marketing to podcasting to now Real Estate and Event Curation, there’s literally not a challenge I’m not up for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Betting on yourself is never a smooth road however I don’t think it’s supposed to be. Life is a journey and everything happens for a reason to get you to the next phase, sometimes it’s enjoyable, and sometimes it’s not.

There have been some struggles, past ventures not really working out as intended, starting over, and staying motivated are just a few struggles I can name. However, I have come to appreciate those struggles, they make the wins that much more special.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say that I am an entrepreneur. I am currently working in Real Estate as an agent and recently started a property management company called 1240 Property Management. I also started an event curation company, Studio 90, where we provide elevated social experiences in Baltimore and beyond. With real estate, I specialize in working with first-time homebuyers and investors. I really enjoy guiding individuals through the process of purchasing their first home because it is a big investment.

Property management is a new venture. I decided to pursue that side of real estate because of my experience working for the city of Baltimore in property maintenance and I saw the need to approach property management from a preventive perspective instead of a reactive one. I also believe that housing is a basic human right and everyone deserves a pleasurable living experience.

Studio 90 was created because I got tired of the same types of parties and events in Baltimore where people don’t dance or really engage with each other so I wanted to create something different. I also have a deep love for music and DJing, so I also wanted to create a company where we could celebrate DJs. The first concept to launch is a concept called Soul Food, which is a celebration of house music and its roots. Soul Food currently consists of digital content which will transition into live events in the future.

I am most proud of my persistence and ambition. I am someone that will pursue any idea that comes to my mind. It’s also not easy to stay motivated in industries where your success is based on the interest and participation of others. However, because I have been able to start ventures that surround things that I love, it has made it easier to stay motivated.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I was born and raised in Baltimore and I love the uniqueness of Baltimore. We are really a city where our culture is one of a kind, we have our own music, our own food, our own dialect, and there really is no other place like Baltimore.

I wouldn’t say that I have any dislikes, however, I do wish we were more open when it comes to showing others who we are as a city and individuals. I talk to transplants all the time and they have said that Baltimore is insulated, which I agree, it may not seem like we are a close-knit city but we are. However, we have a lot to offer as a city and as individuals and we should be more willing to show it.
