Today, we’d like to introduce you to Dejia and Markus Davis.
Hi Dejia and Markus, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started photography as a side hustle in 2019 while working as a 911 Dispatcher full-time for the county I lived in. My husband’s grandmother convinced me to start photography since I would always take pictures of our daughter, my husband, and friends just to create memories to look back on. My husband decided to join me in 2021 after we had our son, and I was learning to balance being a mother of two and working. Becoming parents was another reason why we became more passionate about capturing families- regardless of whether they were growing their family or just wanted to update their family pictures.
We branched into doing weddings and elopements because we’re married, and we genuinely enjoy married life! We love love! We love sessions where the families and couples can be candid and genuine and show their true selves without any judgment. We always wanted to help people, and through photography, I feel like we’re helping people just be present in everyday moments, help them feel seen, and just enjoy creating moments for people to look back on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth journey. Being a business owner has its challenges. However, we put thought and passion into how we want our business to run and what that looks like for us.
I couldn’t give my full attention to photography while working full-time as a 911 Dispatcher, so when I made the jump and went full-time with photography in March 2023, I was happier and more attentive to the people we worked with. We can give the families and couples we work with a better client experience. We’re still learning some things on the business side, but we have a solid foundation for creating and keeping a work/life balance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
We specialize in weddings and elopements. We are leaning towards focusing more on elopements, as we’re not very traditional and love adventure! Maternity and family sessions hold a special place in our hearts, and we will continue to capture and celebrate the families we work with because creating a family is one of our greatest accomplishments!
What we’re most proud of is that even though we’re getting more bookings and becoming busier, we still show up as our authentic selves, and it shows throughout our business and interactions with people. We want to always keep the personality in our business, regardless of where success takes us. We love to travel, so when people find us and reach out asking us to fly to a dream location, our suitcases are probably already packed and ready to go.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We travel! We aren’t only getting bookings for the DMV area anymore, which is super exciting!
We make every travel opportunity into a mini family vacation to show our kids other cities, states, and countries. While we’re making memories for families and couples, we’re able to make memories with our own family, and we are forever grateful for where our business is headed.
