Today, we’d like to introduce you to Nia Brown.
Hi Nia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a writer since age 14. I wrote a short children’s story during my freshman year of high school and, shortly after, was approached by my English teacher, who asked if I was interested in Journalism. At the time, I didn’t know what a journalist was or the depths that writing could take me. However, I was excited to be recognized for my writing and for an opportunity that allowed me to dive deeper into my talents. Once I started journalism, I realized it took more than being a good writer to be a great journalist, so I started taking reporting seriously. I was writing for the school paper and, in my leisure time, running my own blog online.
I went on to pursue Journalism at Penn State University then came back home to Baltimore to pursue my graduate degree. I received my master’s in business administration from the University of Baltimore. During this phase of my life, I was attending school full-time and working full-time, including weekends. It took a lot of discipline to keep myself focused on my goals. Through steady work and never forgetting the importance of a healthy work-life balance, I was able to create a formula for success. This formula helped me unlock my full potential to achieve all the things I wanted. Years into my professional career, I continued to learn lessons on how to navigate through industries and gained a unique insight into career politics.
When Covid-19 struck, I took this time of isolation to pick up writing again. During a time of so much devastation and loss, I found myself showing extreme gratitude for my life and all that I experienced thus far in my human journey. I reflected a lot on my life growing up in Baltimore and began coming to terms with some harsh realities such as Baltimore having so many talented people, however, barely any of those people will reach the success they deserve.
It’s no secret that many people feel like our city has a “crab in a barrel” mentality, and I began to want to challenge that. WHY did our city have this stigma, and how could I contribute to changing it? I didn’t want to gate-keep my formulas to success, I wanted to share them especially with my own community. I soon hatched the idea that I should write an entire “manual” on adulting! But not just any manual; I included my own personal and vulnerable testimonies about most of the lessons I learned throughout my 20s that I felt would be valuable to any adult of any age.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been filled with ups and downs, and the road is continuing.
There are instances where I’ve sold tons of books in one setting and instances where months will go by without me selling a single book. It’s not frustrating because the books aren’t being sold rapidly; it’s frustrating because there are issues that plague my city that I genuinely believe the knowledge in my book could help alleviate.
As you know, we’re big fans of Adult Wannabe LLC. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
Adult Wannabe is a self-development brand that’s dedicated to helping people reach their full potential. The brand name is a piggyback off the name of my book titled, “So You Wanna Be an Adult?” Within this book, I highlight important concepts in adulthood that might be challenging to navigate.
I essentially provide a “cheat sheet” for how to be great at dominating these parts of adulting, such as building healthy credit, going back to school as an adult learner/going to college after high school, mastering time management, learning how to climb up the career ladder, understanding how to be the bigger person during times where you feel disrespected, and balancing bills + moving out.
We specialize in self-development and business development. We believe in uplifting individuals and providing them with the tools necessary for success. We host a variety of services ranging from consulting, public speaking, and workshop facilitation. The brand, Adult Wannabe, is dedicated to empowering all adults to become their best authentic self.
Life is an experience, and it is not a linear journey. Our goal at Adult Wannabe is to teach others how to embrace the present, plan for their future, and create the dream life they’ve always imagined.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
The only advice I can give is, start now! Don’t wait until you think your life is perfect in order to chase your dreams, whatever is meant for you cannot be taken away. So, waiting to start only prolongs what could’ve already been done.
