Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Allen.
Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my first nonprofit in 2005 in graduate school at the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Social Work as a project and failed miserably. I didn’t realize how that experience would shape where I am today. Ten years later, I helped a friend as he was launching his nonprofit and had to learn all of the administrative requirements for running a nonprofit. I saw how hard it was to launch a new nonprofit and wanted to teach others about my startup experience.
In addition, in my career I worked with national foundations. I learned strategies to help nonprofits capture the attention of grant funders, so I also started teaching other nonprofits how to secure grant funding through relationship-building. My platform has since grown to over 31,000 subscribers on YouTube, where I share information weekly about how to start and fund a new nonprofit. I now have a membership society where I teach nonprofit funders to raise money – the Activate Your Purpose and Profit (APP) Society.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. I had to learn that running a business requires vulnerability and exposure. If you are insecure about things in your personal life, they will come out in business.
I had to learn how to tap into my unique talents and see them as strengths to feel comfortable putting myself on YouTube. Sometimes, it’s frustrating to see internet trolls or people who don’t believe in nonprofits, but I don’t regret starting my business.
We’ve been impressed with Boss on a Budget, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Boss on a Budget is a small, black-owned, and woman-owned firm that teaches communities to form strong nonprofits and obtain funding. I teach nonprofit founders through my business and speak on nonprofit startup, fundraising, and leadership development. My passion is working with Black-led nonprofits and other new and community-led nonprofits and purpose-driven businesses, teaching them to use their skills and talents to get funding.
I also created the Activate Your Purpose and Profit Society, an online membership community for nonprofit founders, to help them get funding. I manage an online network of over 15,000 people worldwide seeking grant writing assistance and support and teaching nonprofit startups to a combined audience of over 35,000 followers on YouTube and Instagram. I also produce the Nonprofit Activator podcast, where I feature new nonprofit founders so they can share their startup stories. I am most proud that I can be my authentic self and inspire others to do the same and create businesses their way.
Networking and finding a mentor can positively impact one’s life and career. Any advice?
Look for people whose values align with yours. Find opportunities to meet people in your local community. Think about how you can provide value for others, not just what you can get from them.
