Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Torres.
Eric, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
DEVIX started as a project name and almost immediately became my identity in the music industry. I started with multi-instrumental live looping performances, and I’ve primarily performed with just acoustic guitar and vocals for roughly a decade now. Last year, I had a great experience getting to compete on NBC’s The Voice. I made it to the live show, Top 13, on Team Camila Cabello.
When I got off the show, I started a GoFundMe campaign and invested in home studio equipment and a vehicle to begin expansion: album release, tour, etc. I’ve since released a cover with Sasha Hurtado, my battle partner from the show, of our battle song, and a single of my own, “Time Goes On.” The album is moving along, though at times a bit slowed up because I’m not working with a team, so balancing day-to-day work and gigs/shows can counter some of my divided time for production. 2024 is looking very promising!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Music has always come naturally to me, especially once I started digging into my mission, what I wanted to hone in on, and with all of the studying I’ve put into sound tech and production.
The main bump in the road for me has been, during production and songwriting, rewriting or reworking my songs to fit a full instrumentation. Everything has been written over the years to serve an acoustic guitar only, and you can’t always simply add other notations on top of the original scoring.
It becomes a bit hectic and very jumbled – too complicated to the ear, at times. Finding what route to take for each song is what seems to be the biggest setback, but still manageable.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve primarily been a live music artist throughout my career. I play a multitude of instruments but haven’t always showcased a lot of the stuff I do behind the scenes that makes up a lot of the creative canvas. A lot of my time more recently has been spent teaching myself audio engineering and producing. I’d dabbled in these ventures over the years, but it wasn’t until the last year or so that I dove into it; it’s been going swimmingly.
Something that runs in my family is making something out of nothing and being self-motivated. I work very well in teams, but I’ve always loved having the potential to actuate anything and everything (especially in the worst-case scenario of something falling through if someone else were to have the role and could not complete certain tasks or simply could not be in attendance).
I like having that up my sleeve, being able to do it all if need be, from booking to social media management and writing/performing/producing.
Any big plans?
My primary goal right now is finishing my album. That is the essential step that launches the next wave of DEVIX. That creates content for the tour and other live shows, social media, potential sync licensing, and the next chapter of music I’ve already started to play with during my current productions.
A big change is coming to the live rig – multi-instrumental live looping will be making a return, as well as some electronic elements. Imagine a music studio but on stage during the performance.
