Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Johnson.
Hi Devin, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have a degree in Sports Management. I have also managed fitness facilities and coached women’s softball in college. I am passionate about sports, and I have been that way my whole life. After graduation, I became a Physical education teacher and then proceeded to get a master’s degree in education. While teaching, I also started a landscaping business in 2003.
Since then, I have opened a roller skate rink, made some real estate investments and now I am the Owner and Area Director of an i9 Sports franchise in Eastern Baltimore County. Things are now full circle for me because all of the things that I have been passionate about I can put those things into practice.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the road has not been smooth. A part of being a business owner is being able to solve problems. I pride myself on being solutions-based.
My landscaping company was named Trimworks Solutions. I manage with solutions in mind. I tell my employees, that before they come to me with an issue, try to figure out a solution.
We’ve been impressed with i9 Sports East Baltimore County, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
i9 Sport is a youth sports program for children from ages 3 to 14. Our program focuses on sportsmanship & leadership and we want to build confidence in our athletes on and off the field. Our program is a 1 day a week program, where the kids practice and play on the same day.
We pride ourselves on giving the athletes a fun experience without the pressure that can be perpetuated in other sports programs. Our program is a stress-free environment for parents and children. I9 focuses on the 9 I’s – innovation, imaginative, impassioned, inspirational, interactive, insightful, inclusive, instructional, and integrity-driven. These words are the backbone of our belief system.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Two of my favorite books are Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson and The E Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber. These books have helped me move through life and business with an emphasis on knowing when it’s time to differentiate or move on to the next thing.
The foundation of being a business owner versus a technician in the E Myth book has helped me catapult myself to the next level. Who Moved My Cheese uses the word cheese as a metaphor for helping you determine what you want to obtain in life. The valuable messages in these books have inspired me to be great and to keep aspiring to be bigger and better.
