Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Forbes.
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Absolutely, thank you for having me. My journey started in my childhood, as I have always been passionate about capturing the world around me. My family is very big on documenting everything, so it felt natural to take the torch. When I was in my teens, I would purchase several disposable cameras at a time and snap away. My favorite part was going to get the film developed. My senior year of high school, my mom bought me my first DSLR after I spent months begging for it. I was so geeked when my aunt asked me to photograph her wedding a few weeks later. It wasn’t long before I became the designated family photographer. After leaving university, I worked for a large photography company, where I was able to develop my skills even more. Eventually, I ended up leaving to pursue other opportunities which meant I needed to put photography on hold. In 2021, I started to shoot again to escape the woes of life as I lost my mema and my job. I received my first publication a few months after her passing and I took that as a sign to keep doing what I’m doing and now I am here being interviewed about my art.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, what is a journey without a few bumps in the road? In my earlier years, I struggled with accepting that I am not the photographer for everyone (mainly those who spoke highly of my work). Being overlooked caused a lot of internal turmoil, especially when it came to my craft. In hindsight, it was a blessing that they selected someone else because I could then focus on the people who appreciated my eye.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a portrait photographer who enjoys shooting on location. While I am starting to get back in the studio, some of my best pictures have been taken at locations that I discover while driving. I love capturing close-up shots of my clients, directing the viewer’s eye towards their unique features. When I’m not behind the lens, I work as a program coordinator in the economic development field. My job involves organizing workshops and events that aid business growth and development.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I am a student of YouTube University! I am always looking for ways to improve my skills, whether that is me buying a book from Amazon or bookmarking some random article I came across.
