Life & Work with Dillon Samuelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dillon Samuelson.

Dillon Samuelson

Hi Dillon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I studied art at York College of Pennsylvania, and after graduating in 2014 was awarded a year-long residency position through the Appell Fellowship for the Arts. This gave me a taste of full-time art making, which I’ve pursued since through illustration work, gallery shows, and whatever else comes my way.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no. I’ve been lucky in many regards, but finding a space in the arts can always feel challenging and I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth. There’s a lot that goes into a successful freelance career, and I tend to struggle with most of the non-art-making aspects.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Most of my work I’d categorize as horror or fantasy illustration, primarily made with oil paints or ink.

My style has changed over the years and I don’t know what I’m most known for at this point, but my guess would be “spooky paintings.” Illustration is what sparked my interest in the arts as a kid, and I’m proud to have since created things comparable to those early inspirations.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I don’t have a specific book to recommend, but the local library’s app for audiobooks (mine uses Libby) is a great resource.
