Rising Stars: Meet Nicky Posley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Posley.

Nicky Posley

Hi Nicky, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a fine artist who fell in love with makeup and decided to pursue it as a career. Growing up, I expressed myself through painting and drawing. It was equally escapism and obsession. The intersection of beauty art and fashion was a way to dream beyond my circumstances.

One of my best friends, who is a hairdresser, introduced me to the world of working beauty professionals. Makeup is art, and art is empowerment. When we lean into our passion, the universe leans forward with us. Without risk, there’s no reward. With each new step I took toward this career, I gathered new tools and experiences that would speak to my next chapter.

I always wanted to live in NYC, where I knew I could experience the full spectrum of opportunity. I’m inspired by people who blaze their trails and leave a blueprint to be followed. Legendary makeup artists like Sam Fine, Kevyn Aucoin, and Billy B. inspired me to believe that I could live and thrive as a creative. I got on a plane with a backpack and a dream, and I’ve never looked back.

Over two decades later, and being able to work as an artist, beauty educator, brand consultant, and content creator, there have been many full-circle moments. Though I’ve had some amazing experiences and opportunities in these capacities, the most powerful moment for me will alway be the day that I decided to take a risk on my own happiness. We have to show up for ourselves first before we give ourselves in service to others. I’ve only scratched the surface of what I believe I’m capable of.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This career is not for the faint of heart. Being a freelance artist can be stressful and scary at times. You are in business for yourself, with all the minutia and responsibility that entails. There are no paid sick days, built-in insurance, or 401ks. It’s important to love what you do, in order to get through the more challenging aspects.

It’s an industry that evolves quickly. As artists of color, we exist in an industry that has been resistant to fully confronting its own baked-in racism, marginalization, and double standards, but I focus on the mission and the ministry of what I do. We can’t allow someone else’s limited vision of or for us, define us.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work is beauty-focused. That could mean working with a celebrity for the red carpet or press day, special occasion makeup for the everyday woman or man, or a beauty campaign shoot etc. It’s so important to be diverse in what you can offer.

I’m also a brand consultant for cosmetic development, and a global beauty educator, leading masterclasses for other industry pros and enthusiasts alike. I’m probably most well known for what we refer to as timeless beauty, and global complexion work. Though it’s not lost on me that this is a highly competitive industry, I’m only truly competing with myself.

I’m most proud of having the courage to hold and pursue my vision of happiness and fulfillment, without seeking the permission of others.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
My advice for anyone starting is to learn as much as you can about your craft, as well as the business of earning a living at it. Be patient, and be willing to do the work. Kindness is King.

When I think back, the most burning questions I had were mostly answered by experience. Some experiences have money value, others might be an introduction to someone who can open a door for you. Money isn’t the only valuable currency, so we have to have the presence of mind to know the difference. Know your worth and stand in your value.
