Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiera Atkins.
Hi Kiera, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Film and music have always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I remember my parents buying a VHS camcorder for Christmas when I was 4. As soon as my dad set it up and pressed the record button; you can see a younger me running towards the cameras begging him to teach me how to use it. I was so young but this moment started my initial interest in cameras and storytelling. When I was about 7 or 8; I joined the media ministry at John Wesley United Methodist Church. Here is when I fell in love with the film world. I learned most of the equipment pretty quickly.
Before you knew it I went from working the cameras to helping direct the show by the age of 10. At this age, I was really into watching behind-the-scenes of movies and TV shows on YouTube, writing stories, and making songs. I begged my parents for a camera and I finally got one around that same time. I took that camera everywhere and would record skits with friends, dancing videos, vacations, and holidays with family. However, my true passion for film came after my college tour to Towson University when I first saw their film program. Ever since I knew this was what I was destined to do.
In 2017, I started my own photography and videography company; Starlight Media Productions. Once, I attended Towson University I realized that I was just as passionate about music too. I changed my major to electronic media and film with a concentration in audio production and a minor in the music business. I got the best of both worlds being able to learn how to produce film and produce music. I eventually learned to record mix and master my own music that I recorded in my dorm room. I dropped multiple projects and songs such as “Paper Route” on all music platforms under my rap name, Suáve with the FLO. I received great feedback so I continue to drop music from time to time.
I never intended to be a rapper instead always wanted to be a songwriter, which is something I’ve been doing since I was 7 or 8. Making music was just another fun and creative way to express myself. During my junior year in college, I got a job with FOX45 as a production assistant. From years of networking, I eventually worked as a production assistant, BTS photographer, and background actress on a few indie films streaming services like Amazon, Hulu, and Tubi. In 2022 I had the pleasure of being a BTS photographer on film “Senior” Directed by Toroes D, Thomas Jr.
At the beginning of 2023, my work was published in a magazine for the first time and I was invited to be a PA / Co BTS videographer and background actress on film “A Naughty Chrismess Story” directed by Trey Walker and Rotton Goose Productions. Fast forward; I a CEO, content creator, photographer, actress, director, producer, songwriter, and Master Control Operator at FOX45.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been an easy road. It was many times that I lost hope but I never quit. I initially didn’t get accepted into any college because of my SAT scores. I was so discouraged but I was not going to give up. After many emails of me begging Morgan State to reconsider my submission, I eventually was able to go. However, I had to take the CCBC transfer program.
I had to pass those classes during the summer first to be fully admitted as a Morgan State student.
I was finally accepted at the end of my first year and I made Dean’s List. I decided to transfer to my dream school Towson University. However, I didn’t get accepted into my major until my junior year.
Throughout time, I never gave up instead I always believed in myself and kept my faith in God. It has not been easy but everything I’ve been through has always been a lesson to learn from.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m mostly known for the work I’ve done for my company Starlight Media Productions. I mainly shoot portraits and candid-style photos. I’m also known for my music as Suáve With The FLO.
I always like to say that I’m an ace of all trades. I’m pretty versatile with working different jobs within the entertainment field. If I’m not taking pictures, acting, dancing or songwriting then I’m directing, editing, and producing.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Do not be afraid to follow your dreams!
Push yourself to the limit and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone or you will become complacent. Look at every loss as a learning opportunity instead of a loss.
Lastly stay anchored, your anchor provides you confidence and stability when the world becomes frantic.
