Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnny Capahala.
Hi Johnny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I found that writing out my thoughts and emotions helped me become comfortable with who I am. I grew up watching my father do music as well. It feels though as it’s not something I wanted to do necessarily but bestowed upon me somehow. I give thanks to the higher power.
Living life and writing rhymes as a way to deal with how I feel and what I think has always been my outlet. Music always found a way to coincide with real events in my life. Hip-hop has given me the confidence that I can be one of the best to ever do it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is ever smooth when you’re living life. I broke my ’94 Corolla Hatchback by driving into a pothole. I love my city, and I relate so much to it. Being a black kid growing up in these environments I’m grateful to even have made it this far.
I’ve experienced heartbreak through relationships and friendships. Friends you grew up with getting life in prison or being murdered. It can all hurt. However, you can use it as one of your greatest strengths or let it become your greatest weakness.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician who specializes in Hip-Hop. I’m also a motivational speaker on social media yelling into the camera and telling people to wake up and pursue their dreams no matter what someone else thinks. What sets me apart from the others is that I am unapologetically myself whether it’s in the music or real life. Instead of making or following trends I’d rather make and achieve a standard.
I am most proud of the album I dropped on Hip-Hop’s 50th birthday 8/11 named “NINE HUNDRED”. “The 900” is Tony Hawk’s famous trick done at the 1999 XGames competition. Even when he messed up, he tried over and over again until he stuck the landing. To me, that’s all life is about. Why spend your time trying to do a 360 on your life when you could be attempting a 900 instead?
This album is me landing a 900 for the first time. I think you’ll love it. Shout out to the homie Indicut for the art piece, Goo my homie, business partner, and producer-engineer. Shout out to my homie, Jason my photographer. So many great people to name, y’all know who y’all are.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Confidence, respect, and being myself. I believe that when God gives us that chance to wake up, we have the opportunity to make the impossible possible.
